Vancouver International Airport 2003 - version 1 for FS2002

This scenery is completely new and replaces my original add-on to the default Vancouver International Airport in Microsoft's FlightSimulator2002. This is version 1 of CYVR2003, and has been built using Airport2.6 Build 160. This new scenery is a much more detailed version of this beautiful airport which, in recent years, has been voted in the top 5 best airports in the world by passengers. We are also vying for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

I have been very fortunate - the CYVR engineering staff have provided me with drawings, maps and aerial photos, including a 1998 detailed colour air photo, 3 foot square, and a current regular air photo from which I managed to develop my background map to work on.

The runways, taxiways and aprons are therefore essentially in their correct relative locations, although the airport position itself may not be precise because I had to ensure it fitted over the default Lulu Island underneath. But it is very close. The north terminal buildings - the domestic and international terminals, and the Fairmont Hotel - have been created with EOD and are generally correct in size and location. They are considerably more extensive than the default ones. I have used Sheyer Ansari's jetways and they are correct in number and location, but being generic they do not necessarily reflect some of the articulated jetways, and at the moment I don't have the ability to create those! Many of the textures are "custom", by manipulating existing textures, but maybe one day I would like to develop true custom textures from photographs (maybe).

Buildings on the south side, including the small south terminal, are also created with EOD but have only been sized according to the aerial photo, do not have the detail of the north terminal, and have generic textures.

I have also been able to resurrect the freighters in English Bay (as well as in the Fraser River) plus the radar dome that were in my original version cyvrv2.zip, by converting the ASD files to API (see further below).

I have included all the textures (I think) I have used but I would recommend that any serious simmer include the Airport, ASD2.1, VOD and Nova series of textures in your main Texture folder anyway as good insurance. If you have white textures anywhere, it is likely that you do not have these textures. These can be found and downloaded from SurClaro.com by doing a search or SurClaro in the "must have" files library.

I highly recommend using this scenery with Lennart Arvidssons's textures, and particularly with Holger Sandman's BC Lower Mainland mesh scenery, which is a magnificent and beautiful representation of the North Shore mountains.

I have also created an AFCAD file, nothing sophisticated, but it does line up with the jetways, with some parking spots for the regional Dash8's, that makes for a busy airport.

The main thrust of this version is the correct proportions of this airport and its main terminal buildings. The rest of my design I consider a bit weak but the process is very time consuming and I wanted to upload the "meat" of the airport for everybody's use. I hope (no promises), to do more with taxiways such as arced intersections and signs (there are runway signs), develop much better representations of the buildings on the south side, building signs, better roadways, some fences, trees and eye candy type detail, but it is all a learning process for me. Furthermore, I am ready for a rest after two months intensive work!

Installation.

When the file is unzipped it will include a folder called "vancouver" which includes the standard "scenery" and "texture" folders - copy this "vancouver" folder to where you keep your add-on sceneries.

I always recommend that add-on sceneries be in a separate location outside of the FS2k2 root directory, preferably in a separate partition, since this provides better protection in the event of a re-install of FS2k2. I further recommend that FS2k2 not be installed in your root partition "C" if possible, since if you have to do a clean reinstall of Windows, you would lose all your FS2k2 data. I have several partitions on my hard drive which means all my data is protected which made it very simple for me to transfer sceneries from FS2k to FS2k2. I wrote a "HowTo" at SurClaro a year or so ago on how to manipulate the "scenery.cfg" file and set up a scenery file library structure for FS2k, and the library filing principles still apply to FS2k2.

Import (add) the Vancouver scenery within FS2k2 to its scenery library by normal procedures. No flatten or exclude switches are required since they are incorporated in the bgl file.

Known Problems

Sometimes a line cuts partway across the screen, dark green I think, which might be related to my conversions of the ASD macros. I have posted the problem on the Airport Forum but as yet no solution. Just ignore it, it goes away and I have difficulty duplicating it so that it is difficult determining where it is coming from or pointing to - it disappears up into the sky!

Credits

The credit list has to be long, what an incredibly generous and clever group of hobbyists we have:

Manfred Moldenhauer for SCASM without which none of this would be possible
Pascal Meziat, Brian McWilliams and Tom Hiscox for AIRPORT 2.60 and a constant stream of innovations.
Matthias Bruckner for Easy Object Designer which allowed me to create the buildings
Martin Wright for the bmp2000 program which allowed me to navigate the textures for my custom buildings
Sheyer Ansari's jetway macros
Lee Swordy, fellow Canuck, for his brilliant AFCAD and Traffic Tools programs, probably the most important contribution for FS2k2 simmers
ASD2.1 for its freighter and radar dome macros (original authors Peter Jacobson and Tim Dickens respectively) which I converted to API
Particular thanks also go to my mentor Iain Gallagher who helped remove roadblocks for me in the design process, and allowed me to use his car park textures.
Special thanks to the staff at the Engineering Services Department of the Vancouver International Airport Authority, who gave me lots of assistance and information, including highly detailed air photos.
My beta testers - Roy Barnes, Iain Gallagher, Holger Sandman, Ken McLelland, Malcolm Metcalfe
Last but not least, Microsoft who has made this whole fascinating hobby possible.

And most importantly this release is my thank you to the hundreds of FS designers whose freeware I have used over the years.

Conclusions

Please have fun flying this scenery and I hope it works for you. I will try and answer problems within my knowledge of design. Please forgive any errors and omissions!
