This downloaded zip file is the ninth Named Scenery Module of 'Southampton & Regional Area Local Addon Scenery for FS2002'.

The 'Named Scenery Module' (Module 9 : Esso) covers some 13 square kilometres and reflects the Fawley Oil Refinery site situated on Southampton Water some 5 miles by road from Hythe village in Hampshire (UK). On the seaward side of the complex lie the salt marshes, whilst on the landward side an extensive tree screen surrounds one of the biggest and most complex oil refining and petrochemical manufacturing sites in Europe - namely, 'Esso Petroleum Company & ExxonMobile Chemical Limited'.

The refinery imports crude oil from around the world, including the Middle East and Russia, although the majority of the crude oil comes from the North Sea. The oil is off-loaded at the refinery's marine terminal the largest in Europe. Its mile long jetty handles some 2,500 ships movements a year.

The processed oil provides a wide range of fuels and other petroleum products which is used by the adjacent 'ExxonMobile Chemical Plant'. This plant produces over a million tonnes of chemical products every year of which around 80% are exported by ship from the site's deep water marine terminal. Products are shipped to ExxonMobil Chemical plants in Europe for further processing or to third party customers all over the world.

About 85% of the fuel made at Fawley is transported via underground pipeline which was laid in 1962. Prior to this, fuel was delivered by road, sea and rail. Esso Petroleum uses its own pipelines as well as the mainline system, which is owned by a number of oil companies and operated by Esso. These transport petrol, diesel and jet fuel from Fawley Refinery to distribution terminals across the country, including several airports. The pipelines are inspected regularly with the aid of 'intelligent pigs' devices that travel inside the pipe, cleaning it and detecting dents as they go. It's thought they are called 'pigs' because of the squealing noise they make as they travel along the pipe. Helicopters fly the route of the pipelines every fortnight to monitor for excavations nearby. The avoidance of leaks is a priority. The success of this policy can be seen from the fact that it is now some 15 years since one of Esso's pipelines suffered a serious leak.

The refinery stacks and 'Fawley Flame' can be seen for miles around. Thirty years ago there was a permanent flame over Fawley - the 'Fawley Flame' - but is now a comparatively rare event. The Refinery's flares are a normal and vital part of keeping the refinery running safely and works in the same way as a home gas heater - a pilot light burns constantly igniting any gas that is sent to a flare. Steam is injected through the flare burners to ensure complete smokeless combustion of the gases, black smoke appearing only when there is insufficient steam available to inject into the flares. CCTV constantly monitors the flares so that the steam supply can be adjusted as required to prevent smoke emissions.

Further information about 'Esso Petroleum Company & ExxonMobile Chemical Limited' can be obtained from their web site www.exxonmobil.co.uk. [Esso Petroleum Company Limited and ExxonMobil Chemical Limited are ExxonMobil subsidiaries.]

What's in the Scenery
*******************

The capturing of photographs of the Refinery at Fawley for this Scenery Module has relied upon authentic digital camera shots from outside the perimeter of the site, upon aerial photographic archive references, old Ordinance Survey Maps of the Refinery and being allowed access as near as possible to the security gates. (Since 9-11 security around the site has been considerably tightened.)

The developed scenery includes the Marine Terminal Jetty with a number of oil tankers berthed alongside, refinery chimney stacks, a variety of closed and open (empty) fuel storage tanks, distillation and refining plants, on-site administration and security gate buildings, a number of different fuel tanker-vehicles, an electric train with fuel wagons, site engineers - and even sheep to keep the grass short! The site in reality (and in this scenery) is surrounded on the landward side by tree fencing and by salt marshes on the seaward side (VFR scenery only). Fawley Church and the Waterside Cinema and Sports & Social Club (previously known as the Esso Club) have also been included. The scenery has night-light texturing and selective seasonal variations built-in. Special effects such as flare flames (operating at different times of the day and night), cracker emissions, escaping safety pipe-steam, and smoke from selected chimney stacks have also been included.

This Scenery Module is VFR scenery compatible and links with earlier scenery modules of Southampton Docks, Woolston, Weston Shore, Marchwood, Hythe and Calshot (Modules 1-7). The complete project when finished encompasses 12 Scenery Modules in all.

Quick Installation Guide for Module 9: Esso - Fawley Oil Refinery
******************************************************************

This module (Module 9) extends and links with earlier scenery modules of Southampton Docks, Woolston, Weston Shore, Marchwood, Hythe and Calshot (Modules 1-7) and is VFR scenery compatible. Modules 1 & 2 (Southampton Docks) introduced the user to the Project and was installed through an 'Install Wizard'. Modules 3 to 7 had to be installed manually by the user. [Note: Module 8 has not yet been released!] There are 12 Scenery Modules in the complete Project. Each Module displays (or will display) a given scenery area. Flight simmers can build-up the complete scenery in modular stages as and when each module becomes available by the author.

1. Unzip the compressed file 'soton02i.zip' into a temporary folder. As you are now reading this text document you must have successfully unzipped the compress file into a temporary folder of your choice. You should have the following folders in your temporary folder:

Soton2k2
\... file_id
Esso_Readme_m9.doc
Esso_Readme_m9.txt (this document)
Refinery_Effects.txt
VFR-Soton2k2.txt

...... \Esso
...... \effects
...... \scenery
...... \texture

2. The '... \Esso' folder and its sub-folders must be installed into the existing ... \soton2k2 folder of FS2002.

i.e. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2002\Addon scenery\soton2k2\Esso\

[See 3 below on how to handle and install the effect files.]

3. Users who have installed and activated VFR scenery should replace the Esso.bgl file in the ...\scenery folder with the Esso_Vfr.bgl file found in the ...\Vfr folder. Do not have both Esso*.bgl scenery files in the ...\scenery folder of FS2002 otherwise you will see double!!

4. To see the 'The Fawley Flame' and chimney stack smoke emissions place all special effects *.fx files from the ... \effects folder into the '... \effects' folder of FS2002. The flame and smoke uses default texture effect files. Other effects, such as the release of pipe-steam etc, have been embedded into the Esso.bgl and Esso_Vfr.bgl scenery files.

5. Inform FS2002 of the new addon scenery by registering it with FS2002. When you fly next you should see the default bleak countryside of FS2002 transformed into the 13 square kilometres (around 5 square miles) which represents Esso Fawley Oil Refinery.

Important Note: If you have not installed earlier Modules of my scenery then it will be necessary to place the complete soton2k2 folder & sub-folders into the '... \Addon scenery' folder of FS2002. Files from the 'effects' folder must be placed in the ... /Effects folder of FS2002.
