SAAB 340B MODEL - FLYING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

ENGINE START

After a manual engine shut down you need to restart with the start switches on the main (2D) panel.

AST switch starts both engines. The other two switches start left and right engines separately.

Before a manual start set both fuel levers (on the throttle console) to the mid way position. After start move both levers up to the top of the gate.

After a manual start SWITCH ON BOTH ALTERNATORS.

TAXI

This model taxis pretty well without the use of the taxispeed gauge but it's there if you want to use it.

TAKE-OFF

Before take-off set the autopilot to required altitude and rate of climb.

Set flaps one notch down (7º)

Use full throttle for take-off, raise the nose 10º at approx 90kts

CLIMB

Raise undercarriage.

Raise flaps.

Reduce throttle to 90%

Switch on autopilot if required.

Initial climb 2000 feet/minute, reduce to 1800 ft/min at 3000 ft AGL

CRUISE

At cruise altitude reduce throttle to 85%, Reduce prop speed (PCT RPM) using keys Ctrl-F2 until the needle is in the green zone.

Best cruise height for longish trips (over 300 miles) is 22,000 ft
For shorter trips 9000-15000 ft is better.

LANDING

Set props to full power (Ctrl-F4)

Start your landing approach at 8-10 miles out at about 3,500-4,000 ft (above ground level) Throttle back to reduce speed to 145 kts

For the rest of the approach lowering flaps and wheels will reduce your speed without the need to alter throttle setting.

Lower flaps in stages (4) as you approach the runway, use full flap on final approach, aim to touch down at 90 kts.
