OLD ILIGAN (BALO-I) AIRPORT FOR FS2004/FS2002
a Philippine Flightsimmers Group (PFSG) Scenery
by Rodion M. Herrera

(Following text is taken from Manny Tecson's previous IGN2k2.ZIP scenery)

This was how the airport looked back in the days when Philippine Airlines (PAL) still flew Avros, YS11s and Sunrisers (domestic service) to this airport up till around the late 80s. Notorious weather, thanks to Iligan's 21 or so heavy industries which blanketed the area with perpetual smog. PAL's southern sector used it as a training ground for weatherspotting. The airport has had a disproportionate number of planes fly into its surrounding terrain. PAL alone has lost about three planes here (to the best of my knowledge), a DC3, a Fokker 27 and a "Sunriser" (Shorts). There were others, genav aircraft and I believe a PAF aircraft. Was it the most dangerous provincial airport of its time? Makes you wonder. It's closed now, except for the occasional military or light aircraft.

FEATURES:

1. Detailed depiction of Iligan (Balo-i) Airport, located at Balo-i, Lanao del Norte, Mindanao Island, Philippines, as it was circa 1989. All buildings/structures done using GMAX. Ground polys and some tree API's etc. made using Airport 2.60.

2. You can set the scenery to VERY SPARSE, SPARSE and NORMAL (anything higher than NORMAL will still show the NORMAL level of detail).

3. Scenery adjusts to distance--more objects appear when you're closer to airport, to help maintain higher framerates.

4. Detailed control tower (just slew into the tower and take note of your N/E coordinates, switch to map view, click on "Tower" option, enter those coordinates and enter an altitude of 1323...nice to watch RWY02 landings from this tower hehe)

I'll leave it up to you to check out the easter eggs (there are only a few of them, but adding more later, when I get more free time)

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (FS2004):

1. Unzip rpmi89.zip into your "..\Flight Simulator\Addon Scenery" folder (don't forget to tick the "Use Folders" checkbox of Winzip)

2. Enter FS9 and activate "rpmi" than click OK

3. Quit FS9.

4. Enter FS9 again, and from the "Goto Airport" menu of FS9, type "Iligan"

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (FS2002):

1. Unzip rpmi89.zip into your "..\Flight Simulator\Addon Scenery" folder (don't forget to tick the "Use Folders" checkbox of Winzip)

2. Enter FS2k2 and activate "rpmi" than click OK

3. From the "Goto Airport" menu of FS2k2, type "Iligan"

KNOWN ISSUES:

1. I totally removed building/tree crashes because it gave me a headache to and ran out of time debugging which building was causing the crashes

2. Some single coconut trees tend to flicker--sorry forgot to optimize those, will fix in a future update.

3. At certain distances some objects disappear momentarily but then reappear a split-second later.

4. No navaids whatsoever--which was true with the real Iligan Airport before in R/L. No night textures because the airport is closed at night.

5. I highly recommend FS2004 users to download and install Jacques Marie's PHILIPPINES MESH, available at www.SurClaro.com. It works well with this scenery, but you may notice that cliffs appear around the airport, which is okay, because the northern part of the real airport is kinda like that.

6. Due to the fact that the ramp texture is just a textured polygon, in FS2002, the user might experience very bumpy taxiing. Sorry about this, will fix in a future update.

Feedback is highly appreciated. Just leave a post for me at http://www.philskies.net/forum if you have any comments or problems with this scenery.

Happy landings at Balo-i! ;)
