Roland C11a "Walfisch"for CFS2 by Stuart Green

Arguably the nicest looking aircraft to appear during the Great War (yet cruelly nicknamed the "whale"),
the Roland was the first serious attempt to address the problem of high drag in early aircraft.
The smooth shape of the fuselage and aerodynamic wing struts helped get the best out of the low
powered 160hp Mercedes engine.

This allowed this 2 seater to be on equal speed terms with the single seater fighters such as the
Nieuports etc that were around at the same time and gave it a good rate of climb, but the stubby
fuselage did give some stabilty problems and it was generally thought to be a tricky aircraft to fly.
By moving both wings below the pilot, the aircraft was designed to give good visibility to the pilot
and rear gunner. In doing so however the designers missed one basic element, poor lower visibility.
This was not only exploited by enemy aircraft but made landing a precarious business.
Photographs of crashed Rolands from landing errors abound, it was almost accepted that new pilots
would crash on their first attempt.

The aircraft depicted here is a C11a from 1916 from the Roland factory (logo under port front windows).
Note the painted "curtains" on the windows which were definately not factory issue !

This uses some excellent freeware gauges but also 3 terrific commercial gauges for which permission has been given by those wonderful people at justflight.com.

The following listed gauges are included in this aircraft with express permission of Just Flight Limited.

fsd-albatross.airspeed.gau
fsd-albatross.rpm.gau
fsd-albatross.alt.gau

Their use is expressly forbidden in any other aircraft without the express, written permission of Just Flight Ltd.

To manually start the aircraft place the mouse just above the top left mixture lever and hold the left button
in until the lever has slid in. Next set the magnetos switch to position 2. Set the throttle to about a third
then hold the left mouse button down just above and to the left of the magneto starter.
This will send the handle spinning and evntually start the engine.

Thanks
This model is very much a joint effort by many people and I must thank the following people for their
considerable help.

Peter Harris aka Ggollob for the tremendous technical details he provided about the aircraft.
Fred Green who yet again came to my rescue and created a great dp file.
James Banks for his efforts in trying to get this to fly right. (even though I still tinkered afterwards).
If you love the airfile thank James, if you hate it, then blame me!
My wife who has finally stopped looking at me sat at the PC, shaking her head and calling me an
anorak! (UK readers will understand)
Bastian Hundt and Horst Weingartner for allowing me to use some of their
terrific gauges ( those prefixed BHHW.) Please respect their work and do NOT mess around with it
without their permission, contact them at bastian.hundt@gmx.de
Justflight.com for thier generosity in allowing me to use what are normaly commercial gauges.

This is freeware. That means you are free to use it. It does not mean you are free to make money
out of it in any way...this is a no no and you do not have my permission to make a penny from it so
don't try. You can post it on a web site if you like so long as you keep this file with it intact and respect
every contributors copyright (don't pass it off as your own). It shouldn't harm your PC in any way but is
installed at your own risk, I accept no responsibility for anything at all..ever. (my wife will vouch for that)
