FS2002 Vought SBU-1 "Corsair" Scout Bomber
The SBU-1 Scout Bomber evolved from the XF3U-1 two seat fighter. Vought was awarded a production contract for the SBU-1 in 1935 when the Navy lost interest in the 2 seat fighter concept. It was the first Navy plane to exceed 200 mph and featured new items such as a controllable pitch prop and cooling gills on the trailing edge of the cowl. I always thought it was one of the best looking Navy biplane aircraft even with its fixed gear. I used Paul Matt's excellent drawings for backgrounds in FSDS to create this project. (One note of interest; the drawings clearly state the baggage compartment was designed to hold one standard issue suitcase plus 4 bottles of Scotch!). My kind of airplane! I used Aircraft Animator for the control surfaces and prop animations and SDLEdit for the rolling wheels and the canopy animation. The canopy is controlled with the flaps control and the spoiler control (/) actuates the tail hook. This model is painted for the first section flight leader of VS-3 assigned to the carrier "Saratoga". Many thanks to Mick Morrissey for providing me with the VS-3 Indian Head squadron insignia. The stars on the cowl indicate it took part in the South East Asia Neutrality Patrol in 1938 (I believe). This project was specifically created for FS2002; however I have copied it into CFS2 and it does work OK although it seems a little frisky on takeoff and it needs a dedicated .dp file.

INSTALLATION: Unzip SBU1.zip into a temporary folder. Copy the folder Vought SBU-1 into the Aircraft folder of FS2002. Open the gauges folder and copy the contents into the Gauges folder of FS2002. Close everything and fire up FS2002. This plane should show under Vought as the SBU-1 in the Aircraft selection list.

PANEL: The panel bitmap is a mish mash of Dan Griffith's SBD panel (squished and squeezed here and there) and my own F4B-4 panel. The vintage gauges are courtesy of Phil Profili.

LEGAL: This project is released as freeware. You may modify it, repaint it, etc., upload to another website as long as it is not for profit. You need my written permission to use any of these files for commercial purposes; otherwise just give me credit for the original design. This airplane should not hurt your computer but I am not responsible if it causes problems.

Enjoy! Paul Clawson
