Mi-4 multipuprose helicopter was designed in the beginning of 50-th years and soon
entered mass production on several Soviet aircraft plants. More than 3500
aircrafts were built in Soviet Union during 1958 - 1969. Later this helicopter was built under license
production in China from 1959, with more than 545 built on Harbin aircraft plant.

Similar on outlook to Sikorskii S-55 medium helicopter, Mil Mi-4 was equipped with
powerful A.D. Shvetsov ASh-82V radial air-cooled piston engine, allowed much bigger payload
and altitude performance. Civil version was able to carry up to 13 passengers of max
1400 kg freight inside. Later models were equipped to carry external cargo.

Primarily designed as military troop transport, military variants were armed with single
heavy machinegun in underfuselage pod, but fire-support version was developed in the middle
of 60-th, armed with 4 anti-tank guided missiles and numerous unguided rockets.

First civil variants are not so different from military counterparts, but later specialized
VIP transportation helicopter was developed. Until the middle of 70-th Mi-4P were in service
with Aeroflot on short-range local routes. For example, several aircrafts were used for
passenger transportation from Moscow Central airport to other airports outside the city
(Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Sheremet'evo).

Up to now Mi-4 is in cervice in Cuba, Albania, China, Yemen.
