----------
BD-5 History:
The original design for the BD-5 was penned in the late 60's by Jim Bede. This was then made into a home build kit available to anyone for the asking price of around $3000 including a 70hp engine. Later the jet "J" version came along powered by a TRS-18 microturbo jet engine. In 1983 the BD-5J became famous due to its appearance in the James Bond film 'Octopussy' which was flown by 'Corkey'Fornof.
Over 5000 kits were produced and shipped to builders, sadly only around 150 remain flying but in recent years it has been certified as a cruise missile substitute for training and radar testing. The BD5 is not permitted to fly in the United Kingdom though.

Pilot notes:

This aircraft has an unusually high thrust position in relation to its low COG, this in turn creates a degree of pitch instability during changes of thrust. Re-adjustment of the pitch trim may be required hence the positioning of the the pitch trim next to the throttle (as in the real aircraft). However once the aircraft speed is stable and correct trim set it will maintain a fairly good level flight.
A lower takeoff speed is possible by the lowering of the throttle to 70%, this creates less force pushing the nose down.

You will notice that the BD-5J is fitted with a "thrust reverse" [F2], This is almost always used as a "thrust deflector" and not so much a speed reducing device. The deflector prevented the aircraft from moving at idle thrust which was inherent in the J version.

The aircraft is also fitted with rudimentary night lighting and nav aids not found in the original aircraft although some were modified later with these things.

(I felt the fun for the average user gained by being able to navigate and see the gauges
at night outweighed the need for total reality)

Information on the real aircraft can be found at 'www.bd5.com' or 'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Bede'

Design:

This package was built and designed by "Jez G". The flight model was co-developed/tested by D. A. Beebe (Original owner and builder of the real N340DB) and both aircraft flight tested by Peter Browne.

Thanks to the many people of 'freeflightdesign.com' and 'avsim.net' forums who helped in answering
questions and putting up the many tutorials which have made this BD-5 an aircraft i'm very happy with. Also a big thank you to the many BD5 websites including the one above of which I simply would not have been able to produce this aircraft without.
Flight model created with "Flight Dynamics Workbook, by Jerry Beckwith"

Thanks go to D. A. Beebe for the photos, testing and input in designing "N430DB". Thanks also go to Peter Browne who with his dedication flight tested under all conditions.

Addendum

Apologies to Ken Johnson for leaving in some lines of code from his original BD5 .air file in my first "coors light & Mrs Jones" release and forgetting to credit him for it. Any similarities with this release are purely down to original aircraft specs or by coincidence.
