ABOUT THE AIRPORT:

Brooklyn CGAS Started out as Floyd Bennett Field. Constructed on the site of Barren Island and additional landfill, Floyd Bennett Field was New York City's first municipal airport. The airport is located in the southern part of Brooklyn between Flatbush Avenue and Jamaica Bay, and was completed in 1930. The airport initially had only two perpendicular runways. The terminal building was topped by an air traffic control tower and featured modern innovations such as underground tunnels extending from the basement to the ramp area. This allowed passengers to comfortably walk from the terminal to their aircraft in any weather. A barber shop, weather room, pilot's lounge, passenger lounge, and restaurant were also part of this modern terminal.

Despite the excellent hangars, runways, and terminal, this airport was a commercial failure due to it's distance from New York City. The travel time from Manhattan Island to Newark Airport was less than the time to Floyd Bennett Field, causing the airlines not to schedule flights to Floyd Bennett Field. The combination of the field's location, it's long runways and very low air traffic made it an ideal airport for use by pilots attempting record-breaking trans-continental and trans-Atlantic flights during the 1930s.

The facility to date has been ulitized by the Navy, the Coast Guard and the NYPD Aviation Department.

ABOUT THE SCENERY:

I wanted to do a retro scene with one of the airports in my area. I thought Brooklyn CGAS, originally known as Floyd Bennett Field would be a good subject. I tried to cover two decades with this scenery being that the facility had a long history. The original terminal did not have the familiar glass tower. It was more like windows and concrete. I used aircraft ranging from the Vickers Vimy to the Douglas DC-3. However, because FS will not handle AI helicopters properly, I did not attempt to add them to the scenery. I hope you enjoy this bit of nostalgia. Happy landings.

INSTALLATION:

AFTER UNZIPPING THE FILE CGAS_V1.ZIP TO A TEMPORARY FOLDER, HOPEFULLY, YOU ARE READING THIS README FILE.

If you don't have them already, download Lee Swordy's Traffic Tools v2x and AFCAD2x. Follow the instructions from the files and install them onto your system. While you're at it, download the texture files necessary for this scenery and put them into the main FS texture folder. They are: ASDv2.1, Nova, Nova Gold and NovaSim textures, plus my own custom textures. All are available for free at my website, www.lfssd.net (the "l" is an L, not a one).

Using the folders switch, unzip the file cgas_scen.zip to the drive where you have your FS. Using your file manager (Windows Explorer) check to make sure that all the files are in their proper folder.

C:\My Documents\Flight Simulator Files should have NY - Brooklyn CGAS (Floyd Bennett Field) FLT and WX files
Drive:\FS2004\Addon Scenery\scenery should have AF2_CGAS.bgl
Drive:\FS2004\Scenery\World\scenery should have TrafficFloydBennett.bgl
Drive:\fs2k4_scenery\CGAS\scenery should have the *.bgl scenery files
Drive:\FS2004\Texture should have the following textures:
Sign_US Navy, Sign_US Coast Guard, Sign_Floyd Bennet Field and Sign_Erickson and Remmert
If you have Lago's FSE 2004, then check the following:
Drive:\FS2004\Lago\FSE\Data\should have Brooklyn.SE2

Start FS and select settings to add the scenery in the usual manner.

You should be ready to fly. Happy landings!
