Randolph AFB,Texas Scenery for FS 2004
------------------------------------------------------------
By James Shaddox

This scenery is of Randolph AFB located near San Antonio, Texas. RAFB has great historical significance for the U.S. Air Force. It was built in the early 1930s to fulfill a need for a pilot training facility. Most of the original buildings were designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. For many years from the '30s to the '60s it was the main site of the Army Air Corps' (and then Air Force) Aviation Cadet program. It is still active today, with pilot training programs in the Cessna T-37, T-38 Talon, and now the T-6 Texan II.

This is the third version of this scenery. The previous one for FS2002 was years in the making, with great attention paid to detail, and many of the building textures were taken from digital photography. The night lighting of the base and adjacent cities was designed to be as realistic as possible, especially in the area of street lighting. The landing approach to runways 14 left or right is especially dramatic at night as you fly low over Universal City.

This is a pretty large zip because the scenery has full seasonal ground textures. There are also static aircraft parked on the ramp - T-38s, T-37s, and T-43s.

Those of you familiar with the base will immediately recognize the building nicknamed "Taj Mahal", which is the tall white building near the center of the base with the beacon on top. Most all buildings in this scenery were custom made. Also included are ground textures for the nearby cities of Universal City and Schertz.

I welcome other scenery makers who may want to design dynamic scenery. An AFCAD file is included with the scenery.

REQUIREMENTS:

- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004

That's it. All textures are provided herein.

INSTALLATION - Follow all steps below in order for this scenery to work correctly!
------------

You can unzip the scenery directly into the main scenery directory of FS2004 (or elsewhere on your hard drive) and it should create the folders and subfolders needed. Alternatively, you can create a folder in the main scenery directory of FS2004 (or in a folder outside of FS 2004), and name it RAFB; within that folder create two other new folders entitled "scenery" and "texture", unzip all .bgl files into "scenery" and the texture files (all .r8, .bmp, .*af and .oav) into "texture". In my case, I keep my scenery folder outside FS 2004, like this:

C:\RAFB\
\Scenery Place all bgl's into this directory
\Texture Place all other files into this directory. ie., .bmp, R8, OAV, .*af, etc.

Now start FS 2004, and from the main menu select "settings", "scenery library", "add area". In the "add area" screen navigate to the scenery folder you created. After creating the path, hit "OK", activate the scenery with the check box on the "scenery library" page if it's not already checked, and restart the simulator. Select the "World / Go To Airport" menu, under "State" select Texas, under "City" select Universal City and under "Airport" select Randolph AFB and click OK. You should find yourself sitting on the runway.
