HANA AIRPORT (ICAO: PHHN, IATA: HNM), MAUI, HAWAII
Version 1.0 for FS2004 only.

TURN ON WORD WRAP

"If there is a heaven on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here." Words from Samuel F. Pryor, who was Charles Lindbergh's close friend and neighbor in Hana, Maui. Pryor had enticed Lindbergh to come live in Hana and anyone who has visited east Maui would understand why!

When Lindbergh was given only a few days to live, while being treated for cancer in New York, the doctors urged him to stay at the hospital. Lindbergh replied: "I love Maui so much, I would rather live one day in Maui than one month in New York." He was flown back to Maui and died six days later.

Unfortunately, the beauty of this place is not well reproduced in the FS world. The default airport is just not anywhere close to the real thing, like most small airports in the FS world. See the before_after.jpg enclosed. Megascenery, where are you when we need you... :)

I tried to make the airport based on my memory of the place and a couple of pictures I took two years ago. It is very simple, but so is the real airport, and is much more pleasant than the default airport. It has been a learning curve. Thanks to Bill Melichar, author of some of the most beautiful sceneries (he did all the major airports in Hawaii), I was introduced to EOD which in turn brought me to other tools. See the Thank you section.

INSTALLATION:

Almost the usual... Read the last part carefully.

AF2_PHHN.bgl ---> Drive:\FS2004\Addon Scenery\scenery
*.bgl ---> Drive:\FS2004\Addon Scenery\Hawaii\scenery
*.bmp ---> Drive:\FS2004\Addon Scenery\Hawaii\texture

The "Hawaii" folder can be any folder of your choice. Just don't forget to activate it in FS9.

Finally, the asphalt texture. I wanted to use AFCAD to do this because I like the way curves and lines are drawn with AFCAD (default FS environment). However, none of the ground texture matched what I needed. Asphalt, concrete ... too light. Bitumus, tarmac ... too dark. I decided to modified FS9 stock Bitumus texture which is "never" used (I've never seen it). So go to the main texture folder and:

Drive:\FS2004\texture, find and rename taxi_bitu.bpm to taxi_bitu.bmp.org (just in case you want the default back). Then, place my replacement taxi_bitu.bmp in the main texture folder:

taxi_bitu.bmp ---> Drive:\FS2004\texture

The palm and banana trees (and the flowers) textures are from Bill Melichar. The Bus is from Jimmy R Martin (API available at SurClaro and SurClaro.com). Everything else is from me or from default FS object (lampposts, car, beacon, fuel truck).

Guaranty 1: you will not experience random "building crash" that so often plagues the scenery made with AFW (Airport) and its generic building design. I encourage scenery designers to either design their own building with EOD, or use ScenegenX's generic building option. Whenever possible, I prefer ScenegenX because the buildings (and most objects) are "solid", i.e. you can't just simply taxi through your building like if nothing happened... you'll crash!
Guaranty 2: you will crash if you try to go through the double-light lampposts. They were added with ScenegenX and are solid.

THANKS

A huge thank you to all the freeware tool designers.

Lee Swordy for AFCAD
Pascal Meziat, Tom Hiscox, Manfred Moldenhauer, and the AFW (Airport) team for their latest AFW release
Martin Wright for BMP2000 and DXTBMP (how did I live without the lastest...)
Matthias Brueckner for EOD (Easy Object Designer)
Tom Hiscox and the AFW team for ScenegenX

and Bill Melichar for his pointers, letting me use his texture and inspiring me with his amazing sceneries.

---------------------------------------------

This scenery is freeware. Don't make money with it (I don't think you could...). Last, you can't sue me if your computer explodes because of this scenery, although I'd like to hear about it :)
