FS2004 Scenery for North Island NAS (KNZY) Sand Diego, California USA.

After a hard day of trapping it's nice to have a roost where you can stretch your legs so fly on into North Island. Enjoy a low stress landing on our long concrete runways and relax on our spacious aprons. After debriefing, take a walk along the palm studded beaches and drop by the Island Club for a nightcap.

North Island Naval Air Station has been a pivotal U.S. Naval base since before the first world war. Originally an Island (hence the name) it was connected to the Coronado peninsula in the 1930's and has gradually doubled in size to reach it's current form. With the completion of the Coronado Bridge the Base is now mere minutes from downtown San Diego. While still home to two carrier groups and numerous special units (including the navy's deep submergence and rescue unit) the station has recently undergone some major command changes . Since the retirement of the A-6 Intruder and the S-3 Viking from the navy inventory, North Island has become the hub of west coast helicopter operations with over 16 assigned squadrons on active, training, and reserve status.

This particular scenery package attempts to capture North Island towards the end of it's fixed-wing heyday; say circa 1992. You will find some P-3's of VP-119 still about as well as some general service aircraft. Unfortunately at the moment I lack the skill to produce a usable A-6 or S-3 model for AI purposes but I highly recommend the aircraft from Rick Sasala whick are readily available on SurClaro or SurClaro.com. Both aircraft have a number of fine repaints to choose from and are excellent aircraft to fly into any base.

Both static and AI aircraft can throw quite a load onto the framerates as neither was designed as scenery. For this reason, while the the static aircraft are already loaded, they can be removed by simply deleting the file "North_Island_Static_Aircraft.BGL" from the scenery folder. This scenery also includes several photo-real scenery areas of the Station, the Point Loma Submarine base, the Coronado Marine Base, and Peninsula ULF radio site. These can display well or not depending on the individual system so these have also been separated and can be removed by deleting the file "Photo_EZ.bgl".

I also strongly recommend you download and install the excellent military objects library "mcdmil.zip" by Michael Carr available from SurClaro or SurClaro.com as I used a number of these fine objects.

The scenery features a mixture of custom and default objects for high frame-rates and a custom AFCAD for parking. The photoreal texturing of the island and peninsula was made possible by the unflagging efforts of Jim Dhaenens who defeated the clunky (and possibly evil) resample.exe program from Microsoft. Thank you Jim! Without your support and feedback this project would likely have never have gotten out of the gate.

To Install, just unzip, place, and activate the Whidbey_NAS folder in your Addon Scenery folder and you should be good to go.

For Example: Drive X:\Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\North Island

I'm not big on instructions because everyone's computer is set up a little differently and if you are installing 3rd party scenery you should know what to do with these files // HOWEVER // if you do have questions or need some help I will be glad to do whatever I can.

These files should not harm your computer. However I take no responsibility for explosions, floods, data loss, time inversions, or any other damage incurred by the use of these files.

All comments or questions are welcome and I hope you enjoy the scenery. This is my first scenery so be kind.

Thanks to:
