Lockheed C-130H Hercules
No.40 Squadron Royal New Zealand Air Force
Original "Blue Stripe" Scheme

Hercules' in New Zealand

Purchased to replace the Hastings long range transports of No.40 Squadron, three C-130E's were ordered in 1963. The first three Hercules were delivered (as C-130H's, the first H's to be delivered) in 1965. Two further C-130's were delivered in 1969. In RNZAF service the Hercules have flown to many parts of the world, including being the first New Zealand aircraft to visit both mainland China and the Soviet Union, and flying relief supplies in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Cambodia. During 1972-73 all five aircraft were returned to the Lockheed plant in the United States wing centre section modification to almost double their operational life. Reflecting the increased tactical use of the Hercules following the arrival of the Boeing 727's, it was decided that the Hercules should adopt a Canadian style camoflage scheme.

No.40 Squadron

Roles: Stategic and tactical transport as well as conversion training to the Hercules aircraft. Parachute assault, landing assault, air dropping, emergency air relief and aeromedical evacuation. Since 1965, Hercules have flown up to 15 return flights annually each summer (November & December) to the Antarctic under Operation Icecube in support of Antarctic Research programmes.

No.40 Squadron maintains 5 C-130H Hercules, along side 2 Boeing 727's

The Flight Sim Model

The original Hercules model was built by Daniel Mrawek. I have made some modifications and have repainted it to represent a No.40 Squadron Hercules in the 1970's "Blue Stripe" scheme. I have also modified the flight model to represent this tactical transport.
