FS2004 Scenery - Festung Hohensalzburg (From German: "High Salzburg Fortress")
Salzburg, Austria

History:
--------

Festung Hohensalzburg is a large castle on Festungsberg hill in Salzburg, Austria. It is one of the largest and best preserved castles in Europe. It was originally built in 1077, and then expanded in the 15th century. The Salzburg Archbishops controlled the castle for several centuries. It has since become a major tourist attraction in Salzburg. The castle can be easily accessed via the Nord-Standseilbahn funicular railway. More information on the castle can be found at the following website:

Description and Features:
-------------------------

This download contains the Festung Hohensalzburg, Festungsberg hill, the Nord-Standseilbahn, and a landable helipad with windsock. The Nord-Standseilbahn operates using the Tick 18 animation. Unfortunately, it moves too fast since the animation ticker can't be adjusted. Everything except the helipad (which doesn't really exist) is based on aerial photographs. Full day and night textures are included.

The helipad shows up on the airport list, under Salzburg, Austria. It is called Hohensalzburg Helipad, and has the designator HOH1. The helipad is large enough to hold a CH-53, and is lit at night.

This download was developed using Abacus FS Design Studio v3.5, plus separate XML code for the helipad. The source code is available upon request, especially if someone would like to convert this download to FSX. I don't have the means to test FSx scenery; my 4 year old computer can't cope with it.

Installation:
--------------

All of the installation takes place within the Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery directory:

1) Unzip the download to a separate folder
2) Copy the contents of the scenery folder to Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\scenery
3) Copy the contents of the texture folder to Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\texture.
You do not need to overwrite any existing textures, though it will do no harm.
4) Restart FS 2004. FS 2004 will rewrite the scenary data file on startup.

Google Earth for aerial photos of the fortress and surrounding areas.

Mikrco post on hovercontrol.com for sample helipad XML code.

Except for the funicular, the textures are modified from standard FS2004 textures included with the software. Mostly, the textures have been cropped to include only the required sections to speed up execution.

Final Comments:
----------------

If you have the opportunity to visit this castle, take it. It is quite spectacular, with incredible views. The interior tour is excellent. The walk down Festungsberg hill is also worthwhile if you are up to it.
