*** Californian mountain landing strips for FS2002 ***

By James Belk

A collection of my airstrip sceneries in the mountains of California - most are situtated high in the Sierra Nevadas, but one (Ponciano Ridge) is in the Santa Lucia Coastal Range near Monterey. Adds the following strips:

Ponciano Ridge: N36 24.6/W121 43.8 Elev 2260' RW 16/34 1080x80' dirt (land RW16, take-off RW34)
Coyote Flats (04CA): N37 12.1/W118 28.6 Elev 10030' RW 14/32 3000x80' concrete (VASIs set at 3 degrees for RW16 & 4.5 degrees for RW32).
Tunnel Air Camp: N36 22.8/W118 16.0 Elev 8960' RW04/22 1500x55' dirt
Templeton Meadows: N36 18.9/W118 13.5 Elev 8665' RW17/35 2000x65' dirt
Monache Meadows: N36 13.5/W118 10.3 Elev 7890' RW16/34 2500x65' dirt
Olancha/Grant: N36 15.7/W117 59.7 Elev 3710' RW18/36 2000x80' asphalt

[The exact lat/long and elevations differ very slightly from reality so that the airstrips fit into Flight Simulator's mesh terrain accurately].

Olancha/Grant in Owens Valley isn't a true mountain strip, but it's a great base to explore the Kern Plateau airstrips (Tunnel Air Camp, Templeton Meadows, & Monache Meadows) - via a climb of 6000' due west. Coyote Flats lies about 60 miles to the north of Kern Plateau on the other side of Mt. Whitney (the highest mountian in the conterminous United States), but can also be reached by a long climb up from the nearby airport at Bishop (KBIH) - also down in the Owens Valley.

Ponciano Ridge is quite close to the small runway at Carmel Valley Vintage (O62), 10 miles southeast of Monterey (KMRY).

REQUIRED FILES:

Requires Gerrish Gray's FS2000 tree library ('trees_0.zip' & 'trees_2u.zip').
Ponciano Ridge requires Orlando Sotomayor's Monterey mesh ('sns30m10.zip').
All the other strips require Steve Greenwood's southern Sierra Nevada mesh ('fst-ca-sq-30m10.zip').
[Quick links to all these files can be found at the scenery page on my website:

INSTALLATION:

The easiest method is just to unzip 'castrips.zip' into your root FS2002 directory, e.g. 'c:\program files\microsoft games\fs2002', and then open up the Scenery Library in FS2002 to add the new scenery layer (navigate to the '.\fs2002\ADDON SCENERY\ca_strips' directory & hit OK). Advanced users may wish to place the scenery in another directory, and/or manually edit the scenery.cfg file as required.
