Initial production aircraft were designated 757-200. The first customers were Eastern and British Airways, and for the first time Boeing launched a new airliner whith a British engine (by Rolls-Royce). Regular service started on 1 January 1983, and in November 1984 the first 757 with American Pratt & Whitney engines was delivered to Delta. By mid-1990 Boeing had sold about 480 of these large narrow-body airliners and delivered about 260.
