ANTONOV AN-225 Long Distance Procedures

NOTE: The information below is designed for Simmers with experience

flying "heavy" aircraft with autopilot and ILS approach

BEFORE STARTUP:

Check cargo loaded

Check fuel full

Check flight plan loaded

Check time accurate

Check weather updated

Check barometer set ( key)

Check trim zeroed

Check all doors closed

Check autopilot off

Check desired cruise altitude hold set (FL410E, FL420W)

Check NAV/GPS Switch on GPS mode

Check speed hold set (250 KIAS)

Check lights on ( key)

Check brakes on ( keys)

ENGINES STARTUP:

Autostart sequence engage ( keys)

Check all engines nominal (only 4)

TAXI:

Request taxi for takeoff (<~> key)

Request taxi following lines (usually option 3)

Check brakes off (<.> key)

Request pullback ( keys)

Stop pullback when >2 aircraft lengths from start-point

Spool-up to 50% N1 and turn to follow taxi line

Back down to approx 47% N1 and continue taxi

Do not exceed 15 knots ground speed (use GPS, and brakes to slow)

Stop at runway entrance line

Request takeoff clearance

Move to runway center and stop

TAKEOFF:

Check flaps down 20 degrees ( 4 times, 4 notches)

Check engines nominal

Check brakes on ( key)

Select speed switch on

Spool up to 90% N1

Release brakes ( key)

Maintain center runway heading

Select autopilot command and altitude hold at 120 KIAS

Upon flight, pull gear up ( key)

CLIMBING:

Follow ATC instructions and maintain contact

Flaps up ( key)

Maintain runway heading to 3,000 feet AGL

Select NAV switch to begin flight plan turn

Check barometer ( key)

Maintain <250 KIAS to 10,000 feet (FL100)

Landing, taxi and beacon lights off ()

Increase speed to 280 KIAS (autopilot) above 10,000 feet

Increase climb rate to 2,000 f/m

Increase speed to 350 KIAS above 18,000 feet (FL180)

Increase climb rate to 3,000 f/m

Check barometer ( key ... should be 29.92)

Maintain 350 KIAS (autopilot) until mach .86 is indicated

Change speed hold switch to mach, and set at .88

Maintain climb rate to altitude (up to FL420 max)

CRUISE:

At desired cruise altitude ask ATC to discontinue flight following

Upon ATC acknowledgement, set radios () as follows:

Com 1=123.450 MHz (active)
XPNDR=1200 MHz

Shift change and time to sleep (flight should be longer than 10 hrs)

DESCENT:

Begin descent at required airport distance, based on GPS or 3/1

rule:

GPS=28 min out at FL410E/FL420W
3/1 rule=137 nm + 20 nm (high alt)=157 nm
(160 nm rounded up) out of FL410E/FL420W

Set cruise altitude to 5,000 feet if eastward, and 6,000 feet if

westward

Contact ATC at FL399 (39,999 feet)

Maintain ATC contact and follow instructions

Select speed switch and maintain 300 KIAS when exceeding 300 KIAS

Check flaps down 5 degrees ( key twice)

At 20,000 feet (FL200) change speed to 260 KIAS

Set barometer below 18,000 feet ( key)

At 12,000 feet (FL120) change speed to 240 KIAS

At below 10,000 feet (FL100) set all lights on ( key)

Check airport (map mode) for ATIS Frequency and set as COM 2

primary, then select the "both" button in the radios COM section so

you will hear the ATIS info, then deselect the "both" button when

you hear and understand it

AIRPORT APPROACH:

Select the heading button to maintain course in degrees

Run out opposite from the runway heading using the heading course

button

Change to airport tower and request landing instructions

Maintain 6,000 feet west or 5,000 feet east

Change GPS to NAV

Set runway ILS frequency as NAV 1

Allow ILS carrot to rise above to at least 10 degrees

Change speed to 170 KIAS

Set flaps down to 20 degrees ( twice)

DO NOT EXCEED 20 degrees in FLAPS!!!

Change heading button to 90 degrees toward runway and select

Select ILS approach button

Descend to appropriate altitude (even thousands west, odds east)

Allow aircraft to maintain ILS capture

Maintain Tower comms

FINAL APPROACH:

Gear down ( key)

Change speed to 150 KIAS

Allow ILS capture until just before you are over the runway

Shut down all autopilot functions (all buttons off)

Glide to just off the runway and maintain a 5 degree nose-up atitude

Shut engines down ( key)

Touchdown!

Flaps down full ( key)

Slats up full ( key)

Engine reverse full ( and hold for 5 seconds)

Tap brakes to 30 KIAS

Engine reverse off ( key)

Slats up ( key)

Flaps up ( key)

Increase throttle to approx 43%

Turn right (or left) on first taxiway

FINAL TAXI:

Follow tower instructions or taxi to slot of your choice

Do not exceed 15 knots ground speed

Be careful not to hit obstacles at the edge of the runway with the

wings ... move to the left or right of the taxiway if necessary

I hope you had a good flight ...
