FS2004 Scenery - "Roosevelt Field - The Golden Age" Era of the 30's. This is the last of a trilogy of sceneries for Roosevelt Field but certainly not the least. With the success of Lindbergh's flight in 1927, Roosevelt Field grew rapidly. Most of the major big name airplane builders were here selling and servicing their aircrafts. The largest school in aviation was full up with students using the GI Bill. While the military had moved down to Mitchell Field to the south, the activity on Roosevelt Field was alive with its students, the beginning of airlines and airshows that drew many visitors to the field.

The Roosevelt School of Aviation was filled by applicants using the GI Bill. Large cement hangars were erected as well as asphalt runways and taxiways. A hotel was built on the site which contained an Art Deco bar (because of Prohibition it was a "soda fountain"), restaurant and rooms. When Curtiss sold the western Curtiss Field to the owners of the eastern Roosevelt Field, the eastern half was closed down and the western end was renamed Roosevelt Field.

In the 30's the seldom used east end became an auto raceway and a polo field. An interesting point -- when the GI Bill came to an end the Roosevelt Aviation School closed down from lack of students (The Roosevelt Field Inn also closed). When another airfield (later to be called La Guardia) was built closer to New York City, this began a decline in the activities at Roosevelt Field. The abandoned Hangar A was reused by the famous DJ, "Murray the K". Today Roosevelt Field is a Mall.

This scenery has been a labor of love and I hope you will enjoy it - especially all you classic fliers. Make sure you "slew" around inside the hangars and buildings.

"Roosevelt Field - May 20, 1927 (the Lindbergh Era)" is the first of the trilogy, and "Roosevelt Field - WW1 Era" is the second - both available on Avsim and Flightsim by searching my last name SHEA.
