Flying the Zeppelin Staaken R.IV
--------------------------------

The planeĀ“s large proportions, large weight, high-drag biplane structure and low engine-power, make it a slow flier.

Turning has to be effected slowly, and with rudder, helped by ailerons.
Disable the auto-rudder coordination option in FS.

STARTUP:
Start the engines one after the other with the Ctrl and E keys. It takes a while for the ground crew to walk round and start each engine pulling at the props by hand!!

TAKE-OFF:
Slowly give full power and the plane will start taxiing slowly.
Rotate at around 35 or 40 knots.

CRUISE SPEED
Adjust trim and throttle to have a speed of about 60 kts.

DESCENT and LANDING
There are no flaps, but wheelbrakes have been left in. Make the descent at 52 or 50 kts.
Flare at 60 or 50 ft above the runway. Aim at a horizontal flight. The tail on this aircraft is quite low, so we must not keep up the nose very far and our horizontal flight before touchdown may be almost like our normal flight attitude! You may have a touchdown with 48 kts.
