U.S. Navy Sikorsky S-51 for FS2002
by Greg Pepper
March 18, 2002

This is a new simulation model created from scratch using AutoCAD and G-max. All textures are original and were created in PhotoShop. Due to FS2002's inability to recognize piston powered helicopters, default Bell 206 gauges and turbine engine operating procedures were used. I apologize for this, but until a fix is found, all helicopters in FS2002 will function like turbines. The aircraft.cfg and .air files started with the Bell 206's files and were modified to model the Sikorsky S-51/H-5 as closely as possible given the limitations of FS2002. Default Bell 206 sound files were used.

I have found that by moving all realism sliders to "Easiest" position, this model is quite flyable. As your skill increases, gradually move the sliders to more realistic settings. The left cabin door opens with the "Shift E" key combination and the right door will open by pressing the "2" key shortly after "Shift E". Another "Quark" of FS2002 is the limitations of placing the horizon in the 2-D cockpit view. On start-up, it is too low. However, one press of "Shift-Enter" places the horizon exactly in the proper position. Using the "rivets" on the center windshield divider make exhalant reference point for pitch control and therefore forward and aft speed. I like flying it from the virtual cockpit view at about 70% zoom. The view is far more realistic and all the necessary flight gauges. controls and doors work just fine in the "VC" view.

Important: This is Freeware! It may not be used commercially in any way. This simulation is made for the sole purpose of entertainment for fellow flight simmers. It may NOT be sold or distributed on any disk or CD, regardless of whether the disk or CD is allegedly "non-profit". I reserve ALL rights to this model.

TO INSTALL: Use a decompression program like Winzip to unzip the downloaded file to a
temporary directory; then use Windows Explorer to copy the SikorskyH5 folder to the Flight Sim 2002 aircraft folder. No conversion of the aircraft is needed.

The Sikorsky (military versions H-5, R-5F, HO3S-1) (civilian version S-51) was the first helicopter to be built in large numbers and represented Sikorsky's first major success as well as it's first commercial helicopter. It first flew in 1946. The S-51 was used extensively in Korea by all services primarily as rescue and medical evacuation.
In their civilian role, the S-51 was used as inter city transport and commuter work. The old Superman comic strip even depicted an S-51 as the "Daily Planet's News Chopper"
