SAAB initiated two civil projects in 1944, the 90A-2 Scandia and the 91 Safir.
The 90A-2 project aimed for a short haul passenger liner with best possible
low speed capabilities. The prototype made its first flight in 1946 and
resulted in an order for ten units for the Swedish carrier at the time, ABA.
First delivery took place in 1950. The cold war called for renewed military
production at SAAB, and the J29 pushed the civil Scandia out of production
after only 18 units. They served in Brazil until 1969.
