HISTORY:

The Denel Cheetah C is the most modern upgrade of the Mirage III/5 airframe. The project began with a requirement by the South African Air Force (SAAF), for a modern fighter aircraft to replace the aging Mirage F1/III and Buccaneer fleet. Since the South African government had a UN arms embargo placed on all defence sales to the country (during the Apartheid regime), an upgrade program of the Mirage III series was the only viable option. The resultant aircraft were the Cheetah D/E, which were remarkably similar to the Israeli Kfir TC7/C7, and probably benefited from technology sharing with Israel. In 1995, the Cheetah C was delivered to the SAAF. The C was a far more comprehensive upgrade compared to the Cheetah D/E, and is the most advanced Mirage III upgrade in service today. A Pulse-doppler, multi-mode radar was fitted, along with an extensive EW suite and updated avionics, said to be at least on par with 1990's production F-16's. The Cheetah C has been continuously upgraded since their entry into service, the most notable being the introduction of the Kentron R-Darter (V4) BVR missile. The Cheetah C is tasked with both air defence and strike duties, being the only frontline fighter aircraft in the SAAF. The SAAB Gripen was selected in 1998 to replace the Cheetah C from 2012 onwards.
