FSX and FS2004 Lockheed 9 Orion
By Jens B. Kristensen, june 2007.

The Lockheed Orion was a small, fast commercial transport of wooden construction. A total of 36 Orions of all models were built between 1931 and 1934. Orions were used to set a number of records, and took part in several air races as well.

The original Orion 9 was built in 14 examples for Air Express (cargo) and Varney Speed Lines, a forerunner of today’s Continental Airlines. Varney used the Orion on routes in the south-western USA, and a service from Los Angeles to Mexico City under the name ‘Lineas Aereas Occidentales’.

The Orion 9B was built in two examples for Swissair. It had a different engine, modified landing gear, a cabin for just four passengers, but more room for mail and cargo.

The single Orion 9C was a converted Altair model 8A with a metal fuselage and several other differences from the standard aircraft. The Orion 9C is preserved today in Switzerland, painted to represent one of Swissair’s Orion 9B’s.

The other major version was the Orion 9D, with a more powerful engine and wing flaps for landing. 12 were built, among them six for American Airways and three for Northwest Airways.

Model, interior, panel, virtual cockpit and textures by Jens B. Kristensen, made with FSDS 3.0, FS Panel Studio, Paint Shop Pro and DXPbmp.

Sounds: Based on the sounds of the FS9 Ford trimotor, adapted for one engine with FS Sound Studio.

Gauges: Many are from the FS9 Lockheed Vega. Others are from the Ford Trimotor, De Havilland Comet, or the Spirit of St.Louis. In some cases I have modified them a little bit. Two engine gauges are based on public domain gauges by Mike 'Moparmike' Wagner, converted to xml by me.

The flight dynamics are by Jens B. Kristensen, based on the Lockheed Vega flight dynamics by Microsoft.
