San Miguel Arcangel Mission for Flight Simulator 2004.

This scenery is the seventh installment in the series of California Missions, and hopefully, all 21 will eventually be done. (The first six can be found on SurClaro or SurClaro.com. File names: sjcapm1.zip, CarmelM6.zip, SJBautM6.zip, and SAntonM7.zip). Having been to all 22, I thought this would make a good flight sim project.

(Yes, I know there are only 21 official California missions, but San Luis Rey actually has a "branch" mission, Mission San Antonio de Pala, located about 20 miles inland from San Luis Rey. It is a working mission, and there is some talk of changing it's status to become the 22nd mission.)

San Miguel Arcangel Mission was founded on July 25, 1797 and is the 16th in the series of missions along the California coast built by Spain.

Suggested installation:

Step 1: Using winzip, just extract, using folder names, to where your main Flight Simulator folder is. This will put all the scenery, LAGO, and effect files in their proper places.

Example: c:\games\fltsim2004.

NOTE: If you have installed any of my earlier missions, just overwrite any existing files - they may have been updated.

OR

If you are like me, you don't want some add-on scenery putting stuff into your Flight Sim directories. So, unzip into a temp directory instead and move the files into their proper locations, using the folder names as a guide on where to put them.

NOTE: If you do NOT have the Lago FS Enhancer, you don't need to move the LAGO folder files.
Also: If you do NOT have EZ-Scenery Libraries, you don't need to move the EZ-Scenery BGL file.

Step 2: If you have installed a previous mission of mine, and you placed this scenery in the same folder as the earlier mission, then you are done.

Otherwise, start FS2004. If you skip the start up menu, you will need to "End Flight" to get to the menu page.

Step 3: Select "Settings" (if not already selected) and then "Scenery Library".

Click the "Add Area" button and Browse to the CaliforniaMissions directory.

The "Scenery Area Title" should already be filled in to CaliforniaMissions.

Click "OK".

Step 4: Exit to the desktop and restart the Flight Simulator.

Notes on other scenery packages used. (Not all Mission sceneries uses all the objects libraries listed below.)

1. You will need Garrish Gray's Tree library. Without this add-on, you will see lots of boxes around where trees should be. (In fact, you might even get a crash-to-desktop if the library object file is not found - not sure.) This file is available on SurClaro (trees_v3.zip).

2. You will also need the RWY12 standard object libraries available on SurClaro (rw12pg12.zip).

3. This scenery uses some added EZ-Scenery object libraries (standard EZ Libraries also required):
a. MCDMIL.Zip from AVSIM by Michael Carr.

4. This scenery uses extra FSE object libraries:
a. ronsilentfseobjects1.zip from AVSIM by Ron Silent.

5. This scenery is optimized and tested for the 38 meter FSGenesis SoCal terrain mesh (set at 21 Vertex level), and I highly recommend it. Other 38m meshes should also work, but I have not tested other mesh packages.

Finding the Missions.

Each mission has a start location (an imaginary Helo pad) with a Airport ID. These ID's all start with CAM (for CAlifornia Missions) and have a number which corresponds to the order of the mission founding. So, to find each mission, enter "CAM" into the Airport ID box on the GO TO AIRPORT page. This will bring up the list of missions.

To actually fly to each mission:

Carmel Mission (CAM02)

Take off from Monterey Peninsula Airport (KMRY). Carmel mission is 5 miles SW of airport on the coast. (Heading 230)

San Antonio de Padua Mission (CAM03)

Take off from Mesa Del Rey Airport (KKIC). Mission is 16.4 miles from airport. (Heading 192)

San Juan Capistrano Mission (CAM07)

Take off from John Wayne Airport (KSNA) on runway 19R or 19L. Turn left to 120, Mission is 15 miles, just before the 405 freeway.

Santa Barbara Mission (CAM11)

Take off from RWY 7 at Santa Barbara Muni (KSBA) and make a slight left turn to 070, and in 4.5 miles you will pass right over the mission.

San Juan Bautista Mission (CAM15)

Take off from RWY 24 at Hollister Muni (Co7), make a slight left turn to 230. Look for hot air balloons over the mission in 7.5 miles.

San Miguel Mission (ASM16)

Take off from RWY 31 at Paso Robles Muni (KPRB). Fly runway heading for about 25 miles to San Miguel. Mission is at the south end of town.

San Luis Rey Mission (CAM18)

Take off from RWY 6 at Oceanside Muni (KOKB) and make a left turn to 045. Mission is about 2 miles from airport and is visible after taking off.

Acknowledgements

I would like to thank:

Garvin Barnicoat for his organpipe cactus API macros. I have changed the macros some, but still use his texture files.

Jim Crummy for his railroad car API macro.

Garrish Gray for his tree libraries. It's kind of funny - I spend hundreds of man-hours doing the hardscape for these missions, and it's the trees that make them "come to life!"

Allan Wheeler for his California Coast Scenery. I didn't actually use it in the creation of these missions, but after thinking about it for several years, his scenery inspired me to start this project.

The entire Airport for Windows and the newer SceneGenX development team. These freeware packages make this all possible.

Seev Kahn and Israel Roth for RWY12 and all the people who contributed the object libraries.

Michael Carr for the Military Objects Library

I have collected hundreds of macros over the years, many of which I don't have a clue where they came from. If I have missed anyone, let me know so I can include acknowledgements in future releases.

Designed with SceneGenX (Version 1 Build 61), FS Design Studio V3, PaintShopPro V7, EZ-Scenery from Abacus, and Lago FS Enhancer for 2004. Many custom objects (almost all) are based on photos and have photo textures.

Thank you for trying my scenery, hope you enjoy it.
