Carrier Division One off Montauk Point for GW3 or FS9

This scenery places the two Lexington class aircraft carriers of the pre-WW2 US Navy at sea about 50 miles east of Montauk Point, Long Island, New York and about 30 miles due south of Block Island, Rhode Island. The ships are both Paul Clawson's CV-3 Saratoga, with one of them textured as the Lexington. This package contains the carriers, ship wakes and AFCAD files and it provides for start points on the fantails of both carriers and in the water between them for seaplanes. CarDiv1 is being released in celebration of Golden Wings 3, but works just as well in a standard FS9 installation. Carriers by Paul Clawson, ship wake by The Virtual Navy, AFCADs and ship placement by Mick Morrissey.

INSTALLATION:

Unzip to a temporary location and drop the "CarDiv1 off Montauk" folder into your Addon Scenery folder, then activate it through the Scenery Library.

If you want to use CarDiv1 in both Golden Wings and your regular FS9 installation, you do NOT have to install it twice. You can activate it in both sims from the same folder. (And it doesn't matter which folder.)

FINDING CARRIER DIVISON ONE FROM THE GO TO AIRPORT MENU:

CarDiv1 will appear under:

Country: Atlantic Ocean
State or Province: North Atlantic
City: Off Montauk Point

There you will find three airports listed:

C2MP is the USS Lexington, CV-2
C3MP is the USS Saratoga, CV-3
CarDiv1 Afloat is a spot on the water between the ships, for use with seaplanes.

Both carriers have their start locations on the fantail, ready for a deck run take-off. The start positions are offset slightly to the left of the deck centerline to help avoid clipping a wingtip on the superstructure.

FINDING CARRIER DIVISION ONE FROM THE AIR:

Fly 30 miles due south from Block Island, Rhode Island.

Fly 50 miles due east from Montauk Point, Long Island, NY.

Home in on the ships' Terminal NDBs:

CV-2 Lexington: ID = C2MP, frequency = 297.0
CV-3 Saratoga: ID = C3MP, Frequency = 388.0

Both carriers have deck lighting for night operations. Like the runways that define them, the lights are slightly offset to the left of the deck centerline to help avoid clipping a wingtip on the superstructure.

ARRESTOR CABLES:

These are the cable catch zones for Rich Hogen's Arrestor Cables program. I believe they will also work with the latest version of the Carrier Operations Gauge package.

Paste the zones into your ArrCab.dat file and change the X in the first line for each zone to the next number in sequence.

Don't forget that you're starting your deck run behind the cables! Either set ArrCab to only catch you when your tailhook is down, or temporarily disable the cables during launch. Otherwise you'll snag the cables when you roll over them!

AI TRAFFIC:

CarDiv1 is NOT set up to handle AI traffic. I tried to do that, but every time I added deck-edge parking spaces, FS9/FSGW3 would crash on loading. I don't know what the problem was. If you can figure it out, please let me know! I'd love to see AI on the carriers!

MAKE MORE CARRIER DIVISION ONEs:

Download Paul Clawson's CV-3 Saratoga AND the update from the Sim Outhouse, FlightSim or Simviation. It contains the software and instructions for relocating the ship anywhere in the world of FS9.

Paul's Sara doesn't have a wake and appears to sit dead in teh water. You can use the Virtual Navy's wake from this scenery to put the ship in motion. Just add the wake to the scenery folder and add it to the XML file, using this scenery as an example. Note that if you assign the same coordinated to the ship and the wake, the ship will be centered in the wake. You must offset the wake to put the bow wave at the ship's bow. This involves a lot of tedious trial and error, but the result is worth it.

Note that thet instructions for relocating Paul's Saratoga also work for the carriers and cruisers of The Virtual Navy's Task Force 16.
