HISTORY:

The South African Air Force (SAAF) received the first of 16 Mirage IIIEZ attack aircraft in the early 1960's. The EZ's were operated by No.3 Squadron until the Mirage F1CZ began arriving in 1975. All the Mirage III's were subsequently operated by No.2 squadron at Hoedspruit AFB until the mid-1980's, when the EZ's were upgraded to Cheetah E's. The Cheetah E's were allocated to No.5 Squadron along with Cheetah D's (upgrades of the Mirage IIIDZ/D2Z's) and later merged with No. 2 Squadron after retirement of the older Mirage III airframes. All the Cheetah E's were retired by mid-1995, being replaced by the more advanced Cheetah C.
