U.S. Airforce Gurmman HU-16 Albatross for FS2002
by Greg Pepper
April 2, 2002

This is an all new simulation model created from scratch using AutoCAD and gMAX. All textures are original and were created in PhotoShop. The gauges are from the many I have downloaded over the years. I apologize if I've used your gauge with out permission. I do not wish to infringe on anyone's copyright. I have tried to use the default gages where possible. If I have used your gauge and you do not want it as part of any freeware projects I may do in the future, let me know and I will refrain from using it again. Default Baron sound files were used. I recommend down loading a heavy twin sound available where you downloaded this file.

I admit to not being very knowledgeable with fine tuning the flight dynamics files. I have found that the model flies quite well and fells like I think an HU-16 should. It lands and takes off from water most of the time. Sometimes (for reasons I can't explain) it gets stuck in the water and will not move. If you give it full power for several seconds, it usually starts moving. If someone knows how to fix this, please let me know and I will up date the dynamics files.

I encourage you to retract the gear in the external view at least once. It took several tries to get the animation right but it was well worth it. It's a hoot to watch go up and down. The VC has throttle and mixture controls but not prop controls. I believe the HU-16 had "electric" props. Prop RPM can be controlled from the keyboard.

Important: This is Freeware! It may not be used commercially in any way. This simulation is made for the sole purpose of entertainment for fellow flight simmers. It may NOT be sold or distributed on any disk or CD, regardless of whether the disk or CD is allegedly "non-profit". I reserve ALL rights to this model.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TO INSTALL: Use a decompression program like Winzip to unzip the downloaded file to a
temporary directory; then use Windows Explorer to copy the HU162k2 folder to the Flight Sim 2002 aircraft folder. Copy all .gau files from the gauge folder to your FS2002 gauge folder. No conversion of the aircraft is needed.

The Grumman HU-16 Albatross started out as a company venture and was picked up by the Navy as an ASW aircraft. The Navy designated it as an UF-1. The first prototype flew in October of 1947. It was the Airforce that became interested in the HU-16 as a search and rescue plane and placed their first order of 52 of them. The Navy ordered 6 but decided instead to use them as utility aircraft. The Airforce retired it's last HU-16 in 1973 while the Coast Guard continued to fly them until 1983. Over 2 dozen foreign countries have used the Albatross and some are still flying. Several surplus HU-16's have been bought by commercial interests and are used as air taxis and sight seeing flights. There is even a handful that were bought by private owners and are used as personal transportation. Some have been modified with turbine engines.
