LUIS MUNOZ MARIN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO

VERSION 3 FOR FS2004
(See note on FS2002 compatibility)

By: John Young

INTRODUCTION

After the publication of Version 2 of my scenery for Luis Munoz Marin International on Puerto Rico I was extremely grateful to those enthusiasts who not only e-mailed me with thanks but sent me some additional photographs that enabled me improve the realism for Version 3. After another 200 hours of work, I hope that I have put that information to good effect and completely redesigned the terminal area and added in the famous Aeroparque observation deck and café that sits between the runway 8 and 10 thresholds. I also decided to go the whole way and entirely remove the default scenery which has meant producing a new ground layout and replacing the structures to the east of the terminal, principally, the Air National Guard area which has now been remodeled, albeit, from a fairly poor photograph that I found on the net.

I was keen also to improve frame rates. I have done this by converting the macro designs from Nova to Novasim, which uses a more efficient code. I have also used library files to help with the numerous jetways, trees and vehicles. The user should experience improved performance and I have also created options if some of the detail still needs to be sacrificed for lower end PCs. I know there are stickers for accuracy out there, but in the interests of frame rates and maneuverability on the ground, I have dispensed with a few jetways in the more obscure places.

INSTALLATION (Version 2 installed).

Just delete the contents of your San Juan JY\scenery and texture folders and then replace with the .bgl and .bmp files respectively in this zip. Also change the AFCAD2 file for the one also in the zip. See the notes below about options to trade detail for performance.

NEW INSTALLATION - no previous version installed

The Zip file, when unzipped to a temporary directory, should have produced a nest of folders called FS Scenery\Caribbean\San Juan JY with two sub folders "scenery" and "texture" below San Juan JY. Unzipping will also produce this readme file and the same file in ".txt" format plus some screen shots and the all important AF2_TJSJ.bgl file which is the AFCAD2 file that controls the AI traffic paths amongst other things.

To install to FS2004:

1) Move the folder called "San Juan JY" with its two sub folders"scenery" and "texture" to the usual FS2004\Scenery folder or to wherever else you keep your scenery files if you know what you are doing.

If for any reason the Zip file only produces a list of files, then create the Folder "San Juan JY" with two sub folders "Scenery" and "Texture" manually and then place all .bgl files in the San Juan JY\Scenery folder and all .bmp files in the San Juan JY\Texture folder. (note "Texture" not "Textures").

2) Place the AF2_TJST.bgl file in your Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\ Scenery folder. While this file will work with the default aircraft, you really need to have downloaded and be familiar with "Traffic Tools" by Lee Swordy in order to prepare customised flight plans and aircraft that better relate to the real world. The program is available from most popular flightsim sites.

3) Launch FS2004 and from the drop down menu go to "World" then "Scenery Library" and add in San Juan JY by navigating to the folder where it is installed. There is no need to add-in the AF2 file in the same way if it has been placed in the default Addon\Scenery folder. You must then close and restart FS2004 for the new addition to become active.

IMPORTANT: If you are using my scenery with Tony Agramont's Puerto Rico scenery, then my scenery must sit above Tony's in your scenery library, ie my scenery must have a lower number.

You are now ready to fly and can access San Juan (TJSJ) through the "Go to Airport" menu using the "search places" (runway start up positions) or "search add-on scenery". The latter has a number of start-up positions specific to my scenery. Map view contains Nav aid frequencies.

COMPATIBILITY WITH FS2002

The scenery will sit quite nicely in FS2002 however; I have not had time to tweak the FS2002 AFCAD file to the new layout. ILS frequencies are not contained in the scenery.bgl files to avoid duplication with the FS2004 AFCAD2 file.

TRADING DETAIL FOR FRAME RATE

While I have made careful use of drawing distance so that objects like vehicles and taxiway signs do not appear until around 300 meters, quite a bit of detail can be traded for frame-rate if the users so chooses. The following files are optional and can be removed:

San Juan Trees.bgl - the tree lines north and south of the airfield and the palm trees by the Aeroparque café. Please also remove the trees_jy_lib.bgl library file if you want to dispense with trees.

San Juan Vehicles.bgl - all airfield vehicles. Please also remove the vehicles_lib.bgl library file if you are dispensing with the vehicles.

San Juan Plus.bgl - the black edge strips to the taxiways, taxiway signs, physical glide slope towers, localisers and VOR (electronic ones are still in the scenery) and approach lights. There is no associated library file.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT REMOVE THE LIBRARY FILE LAMPS_LIB.BGL OR YOU WILL EXPERIENCE POP-UP ERRORS "SCENERY OBJECTS NOT FOUND".
