Arizona Airport Scenery - AZ02
8-October-02

INTRO
The major component of this release is the addition of AI traffic at 49 of the
Arizona public and military airports (adds 964 new 2-way flightplans to the
original 466 for the state). The AI traffic is random and does not reflect
actual airline schedules. The traffic was added for me, so I could have company
flying Steve Jones Arizona tour. If you're looking for actual scheduled
traffic, this is not it.

To use this AI traffic requires you're obtaining an AI utility developed by Lee
Swordy - TrafficTools. It is available at SurClaro.com and at SurClaro (if
you can get in.) If you have problems, please follow the directions included in
the that readme file.

In flying FS2002's Arizona scenery, I discovered that I could not use Steve
Jones' "Do Arizona!" tour that was included with his version 2.0 Arizona
scenery. I had used the TOUR document and scenery BGLs with previous versions
of FS and had enjoyed the scenery and time spent completing it. Even though
FS2002 includes most of the airports and the default mountains, rivers and
roads are great, the problem is that a number of airports are missing along
with some referenced navaids and TOUR objects.

This scenery fixes that problem in that the missing navaids and airports are
included along with 3 new private airports, 23 closed airports, 68 fire towers,
57 water tanks, 5 US Fire Service heliports, and a bunch of 3D scenery objects
from the sectionals to make VFR flying easier.

17 of the existing FS2002 public airports missing or bad ramps were fixed.
Scenery was added to 64 default airports that were 'scenery deprived'. I've
updated and included the aeronautical TOUR document to fit the additions and
changes in FS2002. Steve Jones also provided some updated comments which are
included. The updated TOUR is enclosed.

Each airport has it's own BGL file or set of BGL files so it can be replaced
with some other third-party scenery. To remove an airport, just remove all the
BGL files which start with its airport ID.

INSTALLATION - SCENERY
Make a new scenery directory (ARIZONA) with SCENERY and TEXTURE folders within.
Place the BGL files contained in AZ02BGL.ZIP into the SCENERY folder.

Place the textures contained in TXTOTH.ZIP into the TEXTURE folder. The
following generic texture files from ASD and VOD can be placed in the
FS2002\TEXTURE folder to save some disk space: (or you can put them all into
the ARIZONA\TEXTURE folder)
TXTASD.ZIP
TXTVOD.ZIP

Place the following flight files in the FS2002\FLIGHTS\MYFLTS
DoArizonaSTART.FLT
DoArizonaSTART.WX
These files put you at the right start location with typical Arizona summer
weather.

Place the following text/WORD/GIF files into the ARIZONA directory:
AZAPTS.DOC (WORD)
README.TXT (Text)
TOUR.DOC (Word)
TOUR.RTF (Rich Text Format)
FILE_ID.DIZ (Text)
AZ02.GIF (Pix)
AZ_APTS.TXT (Text)
AZ_TRAF.TXT (Text)

Activate the scenery by adding ARIZONA to FS2002's "Scenery Library" - alt-W-I;
Add Area; select above directory and complete entry for the new area.
1. From WITHIN FS2002 press Alt-W-I keys simultaneously which brings up the
scenery library. (you can also get there from the "Settings" page)
2. Select "Add Area"
3. Browse to the folder where you put the AZ scenery
4. Enter a title for the scenery (ARIZONA) in the box "Scenery Area Title"
5. Make sure "Use this scenery directly" is checked
6. Press OK
7. Make sure the scenery is enabled (an X in the enabled box in front of the
ARIZONA "Scenery Area" entry)
8. Click OK and the scenery is now installed

INSTALLATION - AI TRAFFIC
A couple of points before talking about installation:

1. This AI traffic uses only the default FS2002 Pro aircraft. Since you and I
probably have different add-on planes installed, it is important to use
the AIRCRAFTAZ.TXT file provided to ensure the right planes are used for
the traffic (you don't want a 737 to try to use an airport with a 3000 ft
runway.) If you have already added other AI traffic using non-default
planes, you are on your own - just check the numbering in my
AIRCRAFTAZ.TXT file; you may have to renumber the planes in the
FLIGHTPLANSAZ.TXT file.

2. If you don't have FS2002 Pro, you can still use the provided files - you
will just be missing some flights.

3. The generation of the AI traffic was a completely manual process,
including the addition of parking spaces and taxi routes at the airports.
Once you get the traffic working, you can use Lee Swordy's tools to change
the planes, change the times, add or delete flights, add or delete parking
spaces at airports, etc. But first, GET THE PROVIDED FILES TO WORK.

Although the AI utilities will back-up files before changing them, before doing
anything, be safe and back-up all the FS2002 files that will be changed.

1. ZIP all the files in the FS2002\Scenedb\AFDFILES\SCENERY folder to the
file AFD_ORIG.ZIP. These files contain the info used by the AI traffic to
find the airport, taxi, communicate with tower and ground controllers, etc.

2. ZIP the file TRAFFIC.BGL in the FS2002\Scenedb\ATC\Scenery folder to the
file TRAFFIC.ZIP. This file contains ALL the traffic that FS2002 uses.

Unzip the included AI_AZAPT.ZIP into its own temporary EMPTY folder. This
archive includes all you need to install the new AI airports into FS2002. In
this folder, double-click on the batch file AZ_INST.BAT. The batch file will
open a DOS window and run the install utility. The utility AFINSTAL.EXE will
install all the airports, showing the name of each as it is installed, and then
terminate. Close the DOS window by clicking on the X in its upper-right-hand
corner. You can now delete the temporary folder and its contents.

Next, install TrafficTools v1.2 in a folder called ..../TTOOLS. Then unzip the
files contained in AI_AZTRF.ZIP into the TTOOLS folder. Now run TDecompiler.exe
which will generate three files from the existing FS2002 traffic: AIRCRAFT.TXT,
AIRPORTS.TXT, and FLIGHTPLANS.TXT.

Open the provided AirportsAZ.TXT file in WordPad, select all, and press crtl-C
to copy the selection. Now open the just generated AIRPORTS.TXT file, place the
cursor at the beginning of the file and press ctrl-V to paste the contents of
the AirportsAZ.TXT file into the beginning of the AIRPORTS.TXT file. Close both
files.

Delete the generated AIRCRAFT.TXT file. Copy the provided AircraftAZ.TXT file
and rename the result AIRCRAFT.TXT.

We are now close to the end.

Open the provided FlightPlansAZ.TXT file and copy the entire contents as you
did with the AirportsAZ.TXT file above. Now open the generated FLIGHTPLANS.TXT
file, place the cursor at the beginning of the file and press ctrl-V to paste
the contents of the FlightPlansAZ.TXT file into the beginning of the
FLIGHTPLANS.TXT file. Close both files.

At last, run TCompiler.exe to generate the AI traffic.

If you did everything right, you can run FS and enjoy all the new traffic in
the skies and amongst mountains of Arizona.

The F4U Corsair (in FS2002 Pro and Standard) is the AI traffic at the military
bases. For some added realism, get ATC to call the plane 'Navy' as follows: In
the F4U Corsair AIRCRAFT.CFG file (in the FS2002\AIRCRAFT\F4U1A_CORSAIR folder),
after the following line

atc_id=N700MS (or whatever you changed it to)
add
atc_airline=Navy

Also, if your AIRLINES.CFG file (in the FS2002\AIRCRAFT folder) doesn't contain
the line

Navy

add it.

Finally, with FS running, check (Alt-O-E-A) to ensure that 'Traffic Percent' is
set to 50% or greater to see the new AI traffic - 100% to also see the Airport
Local traffic described below. Anything less than 50% and the new traffic will
not be visible.

NOTES
If you have problems with the AI traffic, please be sure you have followed the
instructions given above. If you still have problems, please read the
documentation which comes with AFCAD and TrafficTools. I'm not interested in
teaching you how to use the utilities - the documentation itself does a great
job.

Each of the 50 airports with added AI traffic plus the default 15 airports has
a plane which does a loop around the airport (take-off, circle, land) every
half hour. This is to assure there is always some traffic at the airport, no
matter what time you are there. All these planes carry the designation N???AL;
AL for Airport Local. If you want to get rid of these flights, delete all the
flights in the FLIGHTPLANS.TXT file with that designation. Then rerun
TCompiler.exe. You can temporarily remove them by placing the ATC Traffic
Percent at something less than 100%.

The amount of added AI traffic can be reduced in 5 steps by setting the ATC
Traffic Percent to 89%, 79%, 69%, 59%, or 49%. Any setting of 49% or less will
remove all added AI traffic.

Arizona looks much better if you use Rick Bores and Orlando Sotomayer scenery
packages mentioned below in OTHER ARIZONA SCENERY.

If all goes awry and you give-up, to restore all to what you had before you
started, just unzip the AFD_ORIG.ZIP and TRAFFIC.ZIP back into their folders -
YOU DID ZIP-UP THE FILES AS RECOMMENDED ABOVE, DIDN'T YOU?

To use the runways called for in the TOURs at airports with towers, be sure the
wind direction matches the runway heading. If it doesn't, the controller may
ask you to use a different runway than what is desired.

One case where wind direction doesn't seem to matter to FS is if the longest
runway has an ILS. In that case, FS will always use the ILS runway no matter
what the wind direction.

To make the rivers wider and more visible, get Holger Busekros New River
Texture (newriver.zip).

To fly VFR in Arizona you need the following sectional charts: PHOENIX, DENVER,
and LAS VEGAS - you can get by with PHOENIX if you stay south of the Grand
Canyon. If you want to fly the Grand Canyon, you'll also need LAS VEGAS.
