Here is my version of the SA-350 Squirrel. This is another ship that I have had many requests for in the past. It is a beautiful looking machine with all the elegance you would expect from the French stylists. Compared to a Ranger the cabin is very spacious and this is one of it's advantages. over the 206.

Designed as a replacement for the Alouette series, the AS-350 single engined Ecureuil (Squirrel) made it's maiden flight on Feb 14 1975. With a capacity for 5, and it's very streamlined shape, this machine is very popular for a great variety of roles. It is excellent for the charter market, and is used all over the world for as an ambulance, air taxi and law enforcer. Plastic is used extensively in the covering panels for this aircraft. The rotorhead uses the Starflex Hub, which replaces all the conventional blade hinges with a sandwiched rubber/steel ball joint system which has a very low maintenance requirement. The main rotors are manufactured from Glassfibre.

INSTALLATION, this ship is for FS98 and FS2000.
This aircraft comes already configured for FS98. Unzip the file and place the aircraft folder in the aircraft directory of FS98.
It utilises the standard fs98 bel sounds which are already configured within the file and should work as long as you have not renamed the original bell 206 in FS. The AS355 comes with its own panel, you will need to drop the gauges from the contained zip into the gauges file within the FS98 directory.

For FS2000, place this helicopters folder in the FS2000 aircraft directory, then replace the the .air file with the one contained within the folder called FS2000 air. This FS2000 air file has been optimised for FS2000. It has a better response rate than an imported FS98 air file, and I have attempted to create the effect of a helicopter with a clockwise main rotor.

The panel for the FS2000 version of this helicopter is available from Keiths panel and sounds page..

Flying and controls

For FS98: I have modified the air file to remove the unrealistic cross couple effect between the lateral cyclic and yaw pedals. (The original Bell model in FS98, although very good, produces a very unrealistic fuselage roll when pedal is applied in either direction.) However, here is a downside to this, you will find that you have a lot more yaw authority in the hover, and it only diminishes at speeds approaching 60kts, but I find this more realistic. So you may end up doing a bit of a Huey shuffle on your first few flights, but you should get the hang of it pretty quickly. The only real problem with the airfile is that if you hold in huge amounts of pedal for a few seconds, the ship will go into an irrecoverable rotation, then break. For the best handling, I suggest you turn all your control sensitivities to their full value, and reduce the null zones to their minumum.

For FS2000: I have tried to get the best performance in terms of response and stability at these settings with the aircraft realism turned up all the way. Personally I prefer to fly this ship with the sensitivities for the cyclic and yaw pedals turned all the way up, throttle sensitivity is set low to midway. I also set the null zones to zero on all controls except the ailerons, where six notches from the left hand side of the scale seems to give a good roll stability in forward flight without causing handling problems in the hover. Then adjust the realism setting to your prefered value.

I hope you all enjoy it.
