Some of these vintage warbirds are extensively modified for use in Pylon Racing in events such as seen annually at Reno Stead airport in Nevada, USA. The engines fitted to these aircraft are highly evolved versions of the original Rolls Royce V-12 Merlin of WW2 vintage : these highly stressed engines are very life-limited, and in modified form typically generate in excess of 3,000 HP whilst propelling the airframe to top speeds well in excess of 400 MPH ...
