NEWCASTLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, UK V2.2 - FOR FS2002

By: Don Alexander

INTRODUCTION

Newcastle Airport is a regional airport in N.E. England with a network of Domestic flights within the UK, International scheduled services to Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France and a comprehensive holday flight network throughout Europe, USA and Canada. It is my local airport and I worked there for 23 years so I was rather disappointed with Microsofts rendition of it.

This version of the scenery has been adapted for use with FS2002 and includes all the upgrades and fixes that have been issued since version 1.2 and has been modified further to improve the fixes that were issued rather too soon. The night lighting of the static aircraft has been improved.
At the time of constructing the original scenery my CPU speed was barely adequate for FS2000 and the aim was to produce a scenery that adequately depicts the airport but with as little frame rate drop as possible. With FS2002 this is not so much of a problem. A DENSE setting is reuired for the Static Aircraft. The full scenery is available at a NORMAL display setting but if you are really stretched for frame rates, all the important features are available at SPARSE setting.
The scenery includes all building work up to December 2001 including the extended North Apron.
The Architect of Stage II of the Terminal extensions used a lot of geometric shapes and these are difficult to reproduce with the construction tools for FS but I have managed to get the general feeling. Similarly the airport is on two levels which resulted in some compromises but they are not too obvious unless you go for a ground tour of the airport.

INSTALLATION

1. If you have my previous Newcastle scenery installed please delete it as there could be conflicting files left in the direcory if overwritten.

2. Ensure the 'Use Folder Names' option is checked in WinZip and Extract the archive into your FS2002 scenery folder (normally c:\Program Files\FS2002\AddOn Scenery

alternatively

Go to Windows Explorer and create a new folder under FS2002\Addon scenery. Call it "Newcastle". Create two further folders below Newcastle, one called "scenery" and the other "texture", ie

FS2002\
Addon Scenery\
Newcastle\
scenery
texture
Extract *.bgl to the scenery folder and all the .bmp files
to the texture directory.

You will also require VOD and AIRPORT textures installed in your Main texture directory. You will probably already have them but if not they can be obtained from SurClaro "Must Have Files"

3.

Make a backup copy of SCENERY.CFG (it's in your main FS2002 folder), open the original with Notepad and scroll down to the bottom. Copy and paste the following text after the last item.

[Area.xx]
Title=Newcastle
Local=SCENERY\Newcastle\Scenery
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
Layer=xx

Increment the items 'xx' one number higher than you last Area/Layer. Save the file.

No Flatten or Exclude commands are required. If you are upgrading from a previous version, please ensure the EXCLUDE line is removed from the entry.

NOTES TO USERS:

The Ground Scenery Shadows facility in Options/Display can cause some unusual results with all add-on scenery so it is recommended that you turn this off. This will also give small gain in frame rates.

FS2K2 ATC FUNCTION
==================
At the present time nothing can be done to control the position of AI aircraft if you use the ATC function.
With Newcastle the stands are slightly out but it can be lived with. The KLMUK F100 has been removed from Stand 11 as this is an MS Startup/AI location also the startup location has been moved from Stand 12 to Stand 10 as it overlaps the MS stand. If this is not acceptable, you can disable the statics by reducing scenery complexity to Normal. Some passenger aircraft depart from the GA apron as it seems to think this a terminal building.

Three startup locations are available in the Search Add-On Scenery option.

Jetways are available on Domestic stand 3 and International Stand 10. These are at a fixed height set for a Boeing 757 which is the normal occupier of stand 3 (BA Heathrow service). Stand 3 is also equipped with a simple docking system. Stand 10 does not have this as all my attempts to position this second system resulted in it being 180 deg out and no one could explain why. Hopefully this will be rectified in future.
All stands are Self Marshalling Nose In/Pushback.
