It has three grass runways without any radio and light equipment, but two bigger ones can accept planes with gross weight up to 30 metric ton due to the good base. In July 1923 first regular passanger flights started from Central Airport to Nizniy Novgorod. The airfield also has been used by Ilyushin Design Bureau and planes as big as Il-86 was taking off from there.
