Lithuanians Transatlantic Flights

In 1935 September 21, at 06:45 in the morning, Lithuanian pilot Feliksas Vaitkus took off from Floyd Bennet Field (New York) for transatlantic flight to Lithuania. He didn't reache Lithuania due to lack of fuel as he used a lot of it while flying in poor weather conditions. Fortunately, he safetely landed in Ireland. He flew with Lockheed Vega 5B "Lituanica II". Pilot Feliksas was sixth pilot who made successful transatlantic flight with single engine single seat airplane. The planed route of "Lituanica II" was New York - Newfoundland - Liverpool - Kaunas.

This flight was dedicated to two Lithuanian pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas. They made the transatlantic flight in 1933 07 15-16 with airplane "Lituanica" (Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker). Unfortunately, their aircraft "Lituanica" was shot down over Germany. Lithuania lost two brave pilots, but this tragedy encouraged youth of Lithuania to be independent, to show the world that Lithuania is brave nation. The flight of "Lituanica" was the most precisely of all transatlantic flights before. They flew from New York to the place of death 6411km and this was second distance in the world for that date. They spend 37 hours 11 min - this was fourth time in the world. And do You know who first carried mail from America to Europe. It was Lithuanians pilots Darius and Girenas with "Lituanica".

To tell the truth, I'm happy of being lithuanian.
