LIBERTY SHIP

During WWII, the United States ended the shortage of cargo ships by mass producing a ship called the "Liberty Ship". Unlike other ships, which took months to build, the Liberty ship was built in as little as 40 days. In all, 2710 of these were built and they handled over 25% of the shipping in WWII. After the war, Liberty Ships remained in service for several decades. I designed this ship to go with my WWII Tinian scenery, but it will go with about any scenery.

This effort is dedicated to the men of the merchant marine who kept the armies supplied, often at great personal risk. These ships transported everything from food and medical supplies, to bulldozers and bullets. Over 10,000 merchant mariners lost their lives and many more were wounded.

During WWII, ships travelled in convoys. A convoy can only travel as fast as the slowest ship. Since many old ships in the convoys could only travel at 10 knots, the Liberty Ship did not need to travel faster than 11 knots. Consequently, the Liberty Ships used low-tech steam engines instead of modern diesel engines.

OPERATION OF MODEL

The 2D cockpit view is from the main bridge. The 3D (virtual) cockpit view is from the flying bridge.

The working model has several animated features:
1. Smoke and wake effects.
2. Waving flag.
3. Lights.
4. Horn (sounds in cockpit view only) - press G
5. Bell (sounds in cockpit view only) - press zz
6. Ship's wheel and telegraph (i.e. the "throttle")

OPERATION OF AI SHIP

This merely uses the method explained by Holger Sandmann in ai_ships.zip. This file includes a route around Tinian island - which is the whole reason I did this - to add a little animation to my Tinian scenery!

CREDITS

In order to create these working models, I had to borrow the work of several other designers. Let me know if I have not given you credit, or if you want me to delete any portion of this zip file.

The gauge files are modifications of other gauge files, including the speedometer created by Lynn and Bill Lyons and various Microsoft gauges. ShipSmoke.xml was designed by Rob Barendregt.

The sound files are modifications of other sound files, including various Microsoft sounds.

The effects files are modifications of other effects files, including the effects files created by Holger Sandmann.
