MICHIGAN SCENERY FOR FS98
Mi98v40
By Jim Bosworth

Scenery Installation Procedure

Instructions for installing Mi98v40 into Flight Sim 98
(Please note that these instructions are "my way" and apply specifically to Mi98v40 and FS98.)

You will need the following files: Mi98v40a.zip, Mi98v40b.zip and Mi98v40c.zip
You will also need the following texture files:
vodtex30.zip, txtur202.zip and asd2txtr.zip
You can find the texture files on all of the major flight simulation sites, or on my BozAir site at:
http://www.flightsimmers.net/airport/bozair/Misc.htm

If you already have Mi98v20, delete it. You can use the same folders but do not attempt to use bgl files from Mi98v20 with Mi98v40.

If you are currently using Mi98v30, you are going to have to decide if you want to keep it or replace it with this version - or use them both. I personally feel that Mi98v40 is a big improvement over Mi98v30, the frame rates are much better and I've added a lot of custom macro's (buildings and other structures). However, I did remove the EMT from Mi98v40, so if that was important to you and you don't mind all of the bleed through problems that it caused, then you might want to stay with Mi98v30.

There are several different ways/places to install scenery and any one of them will work but to keep it simple I'm going to step you through the process the same way that I do it. If you do this *exactly* as I recommend, you shouldn't have any problems. Be sure to ignore the " " marks from here on, they are just there to show you what file I am talking about. Also, I am assuming that your main hard drive is "C".

First, create a folder on your hard drive to keep all of your scenery in. I call mine "FS98 Scenery". When you've done this, the location or path to that folder/file should look like this:

C:\FS98 Scenery

Next, create a folder under that for my Michigan scenery, call it Michigan. When you've done that, the path should look like this:

C:\FS98 Scenery\Michigan

Next, create 2 folders under Michigan, call one Scenery and the other Texture. When you've done that, you should end up with the following folders:

C:\FS98 Scenery\Michigan\Scenery
\Texture

Now open up "Mi98v40a.zip" and copy "Mi_33.bgl", into the C:\FS98 Scenery\Michigan\Scenery folder.

Open "Mi98v40b.zip" and copy "Mi_32.bgl" and "Mi_34.bgl" into the C:\FS98 Scenery\Michigan\Scenery folder.

Next, open "Mi98v40c.zip". Inside you will find the following files:

Morebgls.zip
Textures.zip
Seed.zip
Airport Data.doc
Mi98v40.doc
S_and_R.txt

And a few other data files like this one.

Open "Morebgls.zip" and copy the contents into your C:\FS98 Scenery\Michigan\Scenery folder.

Open "Textures.zip" and copy the contents into your main FS98 texture folder "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\Texture"

or your

C:\FS98 Scenery\Michigan\Texture folder. The first choice is usually the best.

Open Seed.zip - you must copy the contents of this file into your C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\Texture folder.

You can put the loose txt and doc files in the C:\FS98 Scenery\Michigan folder or where ever you prefer. You might want to print out Airport Data.doc and keep it handy while flying Michigan.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now you have my scenery installed, next you need to activate it in FS98. Be careful, you *must* do the following steps exactly as I tell you!

READ THIS

First, and very important, go into your main FS98 folder, C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator, and back up the following files:

INDEX_FILE
Fltsim98.cfg

Keep these in a safe place, they can help you avoid a reinstall of FS98 if it locks up and won't start. It's a good idea to back these files up frequently, when you know the program is working right. Also, go into your C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\Scenery folder and back up:

world.vis

This is another important file which controls your scenery.

******************************

Ok, now down to business:

Start FS98 and go to WORLD in the menu.

Under WORLD, go to SCENERY LIBRARY. You will get a "warning" when you do this, don't let it scare you. Just click on OK.

Next, you will see the SCENERY LIBRARY box. Click on FILES.

That will take you to the SCENERY AREAS box. Click on ADD.

That will take you to the ADD SCENERY AREA box.

In the place marked SCENERY AREA PATH, type C:\FS98 Scenery\Michigan\Scenery\*.bgl

(If you did the first part of this message right (installing my scenery) and you typed the path right (as above), the next "box" should become active at soon as you finish typing the path. If it doesn't become active, check for typo's and make sure you followed the directions above.)

In this box, called SCENERY AREA TITLE, type MICHIGAN

In the box called SCENERY AREA TYPE, change it to LOCAL

In the box called SCENERY AREA LAYER, make it 0001

And "check" the box called SCENERY AREA ACTIVE

Now all you have to do is keep clicking on OK until you get back to your aircraft. When you get there, there will be a very long delay while FS98 builds a new data base, you may even get a message that says it is doing this. Once it is done, you are ready to fly Michigan.

On my Flight Sim web page:

http://www.flightsimmers.net/airport/bozair/homepage.htm

you will find current information about Mi98v40. I'll keep a running account there of any bugs that are found and fixes for them.

Be sure to set your scenery density level to at least DENSE or you will not be able to see all of the structures.

That's it, enjoy flying Michigan!
