Esta potencia era insuficiente para alcanzar el desempeño planificado pero sirvió como banco de pruebas volando por primera vez en Septiembre de 1962. \nSu primer vuelo comercial fué en Marzo de 1967 ya con motores  Kuznetsov NK84 (103.0kN) y su primer vuelo intercontinental en Septiembre del mismo año (Moscú-Motreal). \nEn 1971, en la feria aérea de París se presentó el IL-62M con sus motores definitivos, Soloviev D30KU (107.9kN), que entró en servicio en 1974. \nLa producción del IL-62 cesó en 1994, tras la caida del campo socialista, aunque todavía quedan algunos aparatos en servicio. \nRuidoso y consumidor el IL-62M pasará a la historia como uno de los primeros y exitosos jets intercontinentales."
