They felt that the larger slower German sailplanes were not suitable for the conditions found in their country. After learning to fly in a Grunau Baby, Ulrich designed their first model, the H-17 and after the first sucessful flights, about a dozen plans were sold. In 1934 fhe brothers flew the H-17 in the Austrian National Competition at Gaisberg. They joined the Schempp-Hirth company about 18 months later as designers.
