Designed as a replacement for the Yak-18, the two seat Yak-52 first flew in 1976. Instead of being built in Russia.
The first production example was finished at Baku in 1976.
To date over 1600 have been built.

All initial airframes were delivered to Russia to be used either by the Armed Forces or by the state funded
DOSAAF. This latter organisation operates over 250 state run flying, gliding and parachuting schools.

With a life of only 1,300 hours the Yak was actually designed for 30,000 unlimited aerobatic figures with
official g-limits being of +7 and –5. Engine is a 360hp Vedeneyev M-14P nine cylinder radial and the
propeller a two bladed variable pitch wooden V530TA-D35. Flaps, undercarriage, brakes and engine
starter are all pneumatic. A novel feature is the design’s semi retractable undercarriage – the steerable nose
wheel folds up and back and the two main wheels fold up and forward, but none of them fully retract in to
the wings and fuselage. In the event of an engine failure and if the propeller stops horizontally the Yak-52
can still land without damage to the airframe. It has been known for examples to have their undercarriages
jacked down, engines repaired and then put back on the flightline. There can’t be many types like that
about today!!

Example depicted here is RA9111505 a 1990 built example, based at North Weald Airfield, Epping ,
Essex, England.
