FS2002 Grumman J2F-6 Duck.
One of the US Navy's most enduring and popular multi-role airplanes.

Original FS2000 Design by Tom Schaad.
Redesign and compilation by Heather Sherman and the DDG (Duck Design Group) for FS2002

Dedicated to the memory of Mr. Tom Schaad, "Murphy’s War" (which got me started on all this mess), and all the wonderful people who helped bring this virtual airplane back to life for FS2002.

Greetings, as founder of the team that has come to refer to themselves as the DDG, thank you for downloading our Grumman Duck!

You may be asking, how can she call it their’s when Tom Schaad is the one who originally made it. Well, let me explain. Many permissions were obtained in the course of being able to provide this aircraft in a flyable condition for FS2002; all of which were obtained, with the exception of Mr. Schaad’s. After weeks of exhaustive searching, Mr. Schaad’s whereabouts and state remains unknown. Also, for various circumstantial reasons, I have come to believe that Mr. Schaad has passed away. I sincerely hope that I am wrong and would very much like to be proven so.

I have undertaken this project, with a heartfelt feeling that Tom Schaad would be pleased to see her flying again. Also, in honor of Mr. Schaad who had provided a lot of freeware material to the FS2000 community, I have made every attempt, with the limits of my minimal expertise, to not only bring this virtual airplane back to life, but make it even better than before.

In this package is not only the original paint texture as provided with Mr. Schaad’s FS2000 package, but five more as well; a repaint in Navy Royal blue, a fanciful rendition in pink, another in white, a Bush Flying Unlimited livery, and, as close as the parameters of repainting that the model would allow, a historically accurate repaint of a Marine Corps texture, thanks to the walking encyclopedia by name of Michael Morrissey.

There are entirely new instrument panels that you will be able to select from when choosing which version of Duck you wish to fly from within FS2002. Although not historically accurate, they are excellently done by Bill Morad and Bob Familton and visually stay within the nostalgic atmosphere of this classic period aircraft. One even has a working windshield wiper!! There is onboard music; big band tunes of the forties, and even a souvenier from the Hawaiian Islands. How long will it take you to find it? I believe you will be pleasantly surprised and pleased.

I even threw in a few snapshots on the panels of some very popular ladies from the era the Duck was flying in. Do you know who they are?

Anyway, I didn’t keep track of the hours I have invested in this project, as well as the time and effort contributed by many others, with their advice and tips if nothing else, but there were a LOT, believe me. I have been working on this project practically non-stop since the first, crude, but flyable release on July 25th.

This is my first attempt at ever doing anything like this. I have given it everything I’ve got and could dig up, beg, borrow, and, well whatever it took short of stealing. I sincerely believe Tom Schaad would be proud of what we have accomplished, as am I. So, yes, I believe at this stage, I can legitimately call this bird, ours. And with that, it gives me great pleasure to give it, to you.

Most sincere regards,

Heather Sherman

Installation Instructions:

1) Unzip this file into a temporary folder.

2) In the "aircraft" folder, you will find another folder titled "Grumman J2F-6 Duck"
Place this folder directly into the FS2002/aircraft folder

3) Empty the contents of the Effects Folder into FS2002/effects (Take note, there are textures in here as well that go into effects/textures)

4) Place the contents of flights/myflts into the same named folder in your FS2002 folder.

5) Empty the contents of the Gauges folder into FS2002/Gauges. DO NOT attempt to open the DDG.cab file, this is a gauge and goes into the FS2002/GAUGES folder just like the others.

6) Inside the MODULES folder is a FSSound.dll file. Place this into the FS2002/MODULES folder (Not the Model folder). This DLL file is critical to many of the gauges working. If you bypass or forget this application, your aircraft will not function as we designed it to.

7) Empty the contents of the FS2002/SOUNDS folder into Microsoft Games/FS2002/SOUNDS

You're ready to go! Start up FS2002 and have fun!

Music files and changing the selections.

Included in this package are eight selections of music mp3 files, all pieces of music from the same era of this particular aircraft.

If you wish to change the music, it is a simple matter of some minor editing in the panel.cfg file. See the following example:

[Window08]
file=MUSIC.BMP
size_mm=198
window_size_ratio=1.000
position=0
visible=0
ident=705
//window_size= 0.230, 0.220
window_size= 0.300, 0.240
window_pos= 0.007, 0.007
//Increase/decrease number in brackets to raise/lower volume
gauge00=switch1_L!switch, 18,10,30,,Goodman.mp3 [95]
gauge01=switch1a_L!switch, 63,10,30,,LULU Theme.mp3 [95]
gauge02=switch1b_L!switch, 110,10,30,,American Patrol.mp3 [95]
gauge03=switch1c_L!switch, 152,10,30,,Opus One.mp3 [95]
gauge04=switch1d_L!switch, 18,46,30,,Bugle_Boy.mp3 [95]
gauge05=switch1e_L!switch, 63,46,30,,Anvil Chorus.mp3 [90]
gauge06=switch1f_L!switch, 110,46,30,,Jumpin Jive.mp3 [95]
gauge07=switch1g_L!switch, 152,46,30,,Bei Mir Bist Du Schon.mp3 [90]

Let’s say that I have an mp3 format music file (waves can be used too but they’re awfully large when used for full music selections) by the name of “Born to be wild.mp3” and I wish to replace Jumpin Jive” with it.

As you can see above, Jumpin Jive is located at:

gauge06=switch1f_L!switch, 110,46,30,,Jumpin Jive.mp3 [95]

Change this to:

gauge06=switch1f_L!switch, 110,46,30,,Born to be Wild.mp3 [95]

Take the desired piece of music and place it in the FS2002/SOUNDS folder.

That’s all there is to it. Piece of cake!

Since, with each plane, you can select between two diffent panels, you could have eight different musical selection in one versus eight completely different ones in another.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Aircraft goes wild –

Of four beta testers, one of them could not get this aircraft to function properly on his system, experiencing a wild erratic behavour like that of a fish flopping around on dry land. He did however, get it to function in an acceptable manner by using the air file from other aircraft, such as the Sikorsky S-39 New York American, Swordfish_FS2002_Float, or Curtiss P-36A Hawk, the Sikorsky being his preferred file.

The other three testers, in addition to myself were unable to get the aircraft to act this way, therefore, unable to determine the cause of the problem in order to correct it. All that HAS been determined is that it is contained in the air file.

At this time, should you have this problem, I am unfortunately unable to tell you how to fix it other than trying air files from other aircraft. Of course, due to copyright restrictions, I cannot include any of these “alternate” air files with this package.

-----------------------------------------------

Exhaust FX Not Working –

I believe I now have the exhaust fx working properly in all of the Duck versions.

However, there is still an instance where you may not see it working.

If you "Save" a flight with the Duck landed and, here's the clincher, in an external view, you will discover that hitting the general lights key "L" will also turn on/off the exhaust effect.

Due to the programming of the DDG gauge, you MUST cycle through the COCKPIT view at least once before the Exhaust FX will be tied in with the Engine RPMs. When turning off the lights with the L key, you will still see the flame go out for about 1 second but it will reappear again as long as the engine is running.

So, don't be alarmed if you return to a "saved" flight in an external view and don't see any exhaust effects. Again, you have to go to the cockpit at least once to trigger it.

If you start a saved flight from within the cockpit, you should not experience this glitch.

Getting 3rd Party Error Messages and Gauges Are Deactivated

First, make sure that you have placed the FSSound.dll file into the Microsoft Games/FS2002/MODULES folder. If you have, try placing these lines in your FS2002.cfg file:

[OldModules]
FSSound.dll=1

Whatever I Forgot:

As scatter-brained as I am sometimes for always getting in too much of a hurry, I have no doubt that I have missed somebody who should have received a thank you of appreciation. Whoever you are and for whatever you did, "Thank You!"

Also, I have most likely left out a few instructions or the like. If I later think of them I will be sure to upload a "fix."

Or, if you see something lacking, please feel free to contact me.
