Flying the Extra 400

You will not need to set any positive pitch trim on take off. The model will rotate at about 80 to 85 kt. The real 400 will rotate at 70 kt, but I could not get the model to emulate that. Set the rudder trim to neutral, otherwise the aircraft will pull to the left on takeoff. Best climb rate is 1000-1100 ft/min to about 8000 ft. Above that it will climb at 1200. At full throttle and maximum prop rpm it will reach 238 KTAS at 22,000 ft.

I have tried to emulate the behavior of this aircraft as closely as I could given the descriptions on the Aviation Press available to me. If you would like to read more about this new, exciting and innovative aircraft here are several articles for you:

FLYING December 1997 p. 62
AOPA Pilot June 2000 p. 56
Plane & Pilot July 2000 p.32

The specifications used in this model are based on those from the Plane & Pilot article, written by Patty Wagstaff. They have changed somewhat from the set I used to make the earlier model.
