EBFN v1.0 (Mar 2000)

1. DESCRIPTION

Koksijde Air Base is located about 60 miles West of Brussels, Belgium (Europe). It is best known for hosting the Search And Rescue operations from the Air Force's 40th squadron. The base also hosts the heli's from the Navy and the Air Force ATC school.

2. TECHNICALITIES

2.1 Compatibility

This scenery is designed for and tested on FS2000 only. It has not been designed for compatibility with other scenery packages. As a result, and considering the particular scenery aspects featured by FS2K, it will most probably conflict with such scenery. It definitely will not work with FS98 or earlier versions.

The base scenery does not affect frame rates in a material way (that is: not more than the default FS scenery already does). Statics do however materially affect frame-rates and that's why I have included these files in a distinct package. Up to you to decide whether you want them or not.

You don't need to set neither the flatten nor the exclude switch in FS2K. The scenery should be fine as it is.

2.2 File content

Ebfn.zip includes the following files:

* ebfn.bgl: the base scenery;
* ebfn_excl.bgl: the exclude file;
* ebafd.bgl: the FS menu listing;
* ebfn_stat.zip: static a/c;
* ebfn.txt: this file;
* ebtx.zip: texture files;
* ebfn_iap?.jpg: approach plates;
* ebfn.gif: squadron logo;
* fileid.id: zip file header

2.3 Installation

2.3.0. scenery structure:
All eb?? sceneries share the same texture and menu listing files. These are updated at each new scenery. Therefore I would suggest that you put all eb?? sceneries in one scenery directory. Doing so will require only one other directory to accomodate the texture files, even when other sceneries follow. Not only will it save disk space, but you only need to overwrite one set of files at each update, which makes the maintenance easier.
All eb?? sceneries also share the same menu listing file. The ebafd.bgl file is thus cumulative. It includes the menu listing of all previously released scenery files (cfr 4.2. below).

2.3.1. core scenery and texture files:
Follow the standard procedure. Create a new directory - the main directory - (for example "eb??") wherever you choose.
Unzip eb??.zip and ebtx.zip in this main eb?? directory. The two required subdirectories \scenery and \texture are automatically created and filled.
As a matter of control, you may want to verify that the *.bgl file appears in the \scenery subdirectory, and the *.bmp files in the \texture subdirectory.
As explained in 2.3.0. above, just overwrite the older texture and afd.bgl files and replace them with the more recent ones where applicable.

2.3.2 the static a/c files:
Unzip eb??_stat.zip in the same directory as sub 2.3.1. The *.bgl file is the scenery file, the *.?af files are the a/c textures. Static a/c files are rather frame-rate consuming. It definitely can make the difference in FS2K. Offering these files as distinct files lets you make your own decision whether you want to add these to the scenery or not.

2.3.3. other files:
The files will appear in your main ebfn directory after execution of point 2.3.1. above.

The eb??_iap.jpg files are simple approach plates made with FINAL APPROACH. I thought it to be an user friendly alternative for those of you who do not use this application.

Keep eb??.txt and ebfn.gif for reference purposes and discard fileid.id.

2.3.4. activation:
Finally, unless you put the files in an existing scenery directory which is already active, activate the new scenery by the FS2K menu.

2.4 Scenery complexity

Visibility levels are set as follows:
- very sparse: runways only;
- sparse: runways + ground polygons (grass, apron and taxiways)
- normal: sparse + hangars and other objects

2.5 Textures

This scenery uses specific bitmap textures as provided. Apart from these textures, a few objects additionally require standard AIRPORT textures. These files are widely available on popular download sites (where you found these files), so I haven't included them in this package. Put these textures in the global \texture directory, so that they serve for other sceneries as well.

3. OPERATIONS

3.1 Airport

Airport coordinates are N 51 05 30 / E 002 39 20. Airport elevation is about 6 m (20 ft MSL).

One startup position is available for the rwy 29 holding position. Select the "Go To Airports" Menu. There you have two alternatives:

1. select Europe/Belgium Air Bases (a new entry next to the default 'Belgium'), or
2. point to the button older FS 5.1 scenery and select "Koksijde AB".

3.2 Runways

Rwy 29/11: 8786*164 ft. Its ILS frequency, id and heading are as follows: 110.60 CSY 291°. ILS is not available in reality, but adds functionality here. Approach plates for (VOR)TAC and ILS approaches to rwy 29 are included as well.

3.3 Navaids

The KOK VOR/DME - frequency 114.50 - is a standard navaid on FS2K, but I nevertheless have included it in this scenery. The exclude file eliminates the default FS2K one. Reason is that the VOR and DME are distinct navaids in FS2K. That's not an issue as such, but problem is that FS2K assigns an identical frequency to both. As a result, you can't access both on your navigation instruments - one of them is always masking the other one. The navaid included in this scenery will feature both the VOR and the DME on the same navigation radio at the same time.
