EBBL v1.0, Dec98)

1. DESCRIPTION

This scenery represents Kleine Brogel Air Base (EBBL), operated by the Belgian Air Force. The base is located about 60 miles Northeast of Brussels, Belgium (Europe).

The history of Kleine Brogel ("KB") starts in 1944, when the allied forces set up a tactical airfield, from which two RAF canadian wings operated with Spitfires. KB now hosts the 10th Tactical Wing with four F-16 Fighting Falcons squadrons: 23th Sqn, 31th Sqn, 349th Sqn and OCU Sqn. The 23th 'Devil' Sqn and the 31th 'Tiger' Sqn are assigned to offensive tasks. The 349th Sqn is the oldest squadron in the BAF, originating in 1942 in the UK. It's used for air defense and also participates in the Quick Reaction Alert task force. The OCU Sqn is a training squadron for F-16 newbies . All but OCU liveries are included as statics.

2. TECHNICALITIES

2.1 Compatibility

This scenery is designed for and tested on FS98 only. It has not been designed for compatibility with other scenery packages. As a result, it may even conflict with such scenery.

2.2 File content

Ebbl.zip includes the following files:

* ebbl.bgl: the scenery;
* ebbliap.zip: approach plates;
* ebbl.txt: this file;
* ebbl.gif: scenery picture;
* ebbltex.zip: textures;
* fileid.id: zip file header
* grass.R8: dedicated texture file.

2.3 Installation

2.3.1. the scenery files:
Follow the standard procedure. Create a new directory - the main directory - (for example "ebbl") wherever you choose.
Unzip ebbl.zip in this main ebbl directory. The two required subdirectories \scenery and \texture are automatically created and filled.
As a matter of control, you may want to verify that the *.bgl file appears in the \scenery subdirectory, and the *.r8 file in the \texture subdirectory.

2.3.2. the static aircraft files provided in ebblstat.zip:
Unzip ebblstat.zip in the main ebbl directory. The *.bgl file now appears in the \scenery subdirectory, and the *.af? files in the \texture subdirectory.

2.3.3. the textures provided in ebbltex.zip:
All files are standard AIRPORT textures. So, first check whether they are not yet present in your global Flight Simulator\Texture subdirectory. If so, you don't need to copy them again. If not, you have two options on where to unzip these ebbltex.zip to:
- in your global Flight Simulator\Texture subdirectory. Doing so allows you to use the same files for other sceneries as well, which saves disk space;
- in the \texture subdirectory referred to above.

2.3.4. other files:
The files will appear in your main ebbl directory after execution of point 2.3.1. above.

Unzip ebbliap.zip and transfer the ebbl*.iap files to your FINAL APPROACH program subdirectory. The *.jpg files are identical to the *.iap files. I thought these to be a convenient viewing alternative for those of you who do not have the FINAL APPROACH program.

Keep ebbl.txt and ebbl.jpg for further reference and discard fileid.id.

Finally, activate the new scenery either by the FS98 menu, either by third party software (such as AREAMAN - see 4. below -, for example).

2.4 Scenery complexity

Visibility levels are designed as follows:
- very sparse: runways only;
- sparse: runways + ground polygons (grass, apron and runways);
- normal: basic scenery (limited number of shelters);
- dense: normal + additional shelters;
- very dense: dense + lined up 3D objects (trees).

The static aircrafts appear from 'normal' settings on.

2.5 Textures

This scenery uses one specific texture: grass.r8. This texture differs slightly from the default grass.r8 file located in the global Flight simulator\texture directory. Therefore the file MUST be located in the dedicated ebbl\texture subdirectory. If you prefer to use the default FS98 grass textures, then simply delete the file.

Apart from the dedicated texture (grass.R8), this scenery uses following standard AIRPORT and VOD textures, all supplied in this package:
- Flags2.oav;
- Airpt001.oav;
- Airpt003.oav;
- Airpt005.oav;
- VODapt8.pat.
Unzip these in the global Flight simulator\texture directory (and not in the dedicated ebbl\texture directory), but only if you don't have them yet.

2.6 Tiles (scenery designers only)

Only four size 6 tiles are included as platform for this scenery, which is located at about their middle. The four tiles cover rows 1349 and 1350 and columns 123 and 124. Tile height is set at 63m (207ft).

3. OPERATIONS

3.1 "Go To Airports" Menu

Point to the button FS 6.0 scenery and select "Kleine Brogel AB". Four startup positions are available:
- Rwy 23, about 30 ft from threshold;
- Tiger Squadron (Alpha zone);
- Devil Squadron;
- Quick Reaction Alert.

Airport coordinates are N 51 10 and E 05 28. Airport elevation is 63m (207ft MSL).

3.2 Navaids

The sole navaid related to this scenery is the BBL Vortac - frequency 109.80. As it is a standard navaid on FS98, it is not included in this scenery.
There is no ILS available in reality. However, the scenery includes ILS facilities for the pilots' convenience. ILS frequencies, id's and headings are as follows:
- rwy 23: 109.70 IKL 230°;
- rwy 05: 108.70 IKB 050°.

3.3 Approach plates

Two approach plates are provided, one for each rwy: 23(ILS) and 05(ILS). Three SID (Standard Instrument Departure) charts are provided as well. Charts are sourced from mixed resources and may therefore differ from official approach charts.

3.4 Communication frequencies (selection)

- TWR: 122.10;
- APP: 122.50.

3.5 Runways

- Rwy 23R/05L: 10085*147 ft (main);
- Rwy 23L/05R: 7800*74 ft (backup);

3.6 Scenery

The shelters feature automatic functioning doors and lights. When an aircraft positions itself before a closed shelter door, the door will gradually open as the aircraft proceeds to enter the shelter. In a similar way, shelter lights will illuminate (top light as well as ground light effect) at night and dusk as soon as the aircraft is close enough.
Some shelters have permanent open doors and lights. These shelters accomodate the static aircrafts.
Remember to set the scenery density to 'dense' to view all shelters.
