CYYT – St. John’s International Airport V1.0
St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada
FS2002 Scenery Enhancement

Authors: Craig Mosher, Steve Mosher

St. John’s International Airport is the second busiest airport in the region trailing only Halifax in passenger movements. The Airport was originally constructed in 1941
And has recently undergone a $60M re-development. CYYT is the Eastern most major airport in North America. As a result, St. John’s is a popular refueling center for short range commercial, private and military aircraft making Trans-Atlantic flights.
Both Esso and Shell operate large bases at CYYT for this purpose.

CYYT is our third attempt at FS Scenery (CYHZ being the first, CYQM being the second…both available on www.SurClaro.com under those keywords)…we still find ourselves learning as we go along. This is Version 1.0, and primarily focuses on replacing all of the buildings on the airside of the facility with accurate, custom built, photo-textured GMAX models, including a detailed terminal, control tower and a dozen or so support buildings. In addition to this, we have also developed some static scenery, new ramp areas and taxiway/runway signs. The default runways and taxiways are unaltered. As a result, Cougar Helicopters is a bit too close to the terminal, but otherwise quite accurate. The area beyond the B767 at Gate 1 is not a hardened area in this scenery. It is not advisable to taxi beyond gate 1, but there should be no reason to do so, as there are no jet bridges or gates beyond the B767.
We are still tinkering around with hardening areas with BGLC type code, and will implement the necessary changes in the next version of the scenery.

One of our primary goals was to achieve high performance scenery with good framerates. GMAX seems to have made this possible. We have not had any performance issues to speak of (Athlon 1900XP, Geforce 3). This airport is a little more detailed than the previous two, and is slightly slower in performance, but not noticeably so. If this is objectionable, each scenery object or group of objects has a separate *.bgl file. They can be removed one by one to improve performance. There are no inter-dependencies between the *.bgl files so they can be removed at the users own discretion. For most flight-simmers this will be an unlikely scenario, but the option is there if required.

The static airplanes also have separate *.bgl files. For those that want to open up every gate for AI traffic, delete the bgl’s as required.

The texturing, especially at night time has been developed with specific monitor brightness in mind. Go to an unlit taxiway (CYYT or any other location) during the dead of night, and set your monitor brightness control so that the grey taxiway surface is just visible. Do this in a darkened or subdued room. The texturing will now appear the way we see it on our machines.

Installation:

Unzip the CYYT_v10.zip file into the FS2002/scenery directory. The zip file will create the proper directory structure automatically and copy the files to the appropriate locations. If for some reason it does not work, or you prefer to do it manually do this:

Go to fs2002 main scenery directory....

1 make a sub-directory called CYYT
2 make two subdirectories under that… scenery and texture (not textures)
3 place all *.bgl in scenery
4 place all *.bmp in texture
5 ignore all others

All users then…

6 start fs2002 and go to any airport
7 go to the world menu in FS2002
8 go to scenery library
9 click add scenery
10 browse to the directory CYYT
11 give the scenery any name
12 It should now show on the scenery list as active

Make sure your scenery density is set to “normal” or higher. Nothing will show up in FS2002 at levels below “normal”

In addition to these files there is also an AFCAD file that co-ordinates AI with the new terminal layout. Refer to your AFCAD documentation for installation of this file. The file is called CYYT1.txt

AFCAD by Lee Swordy can be downloaded from www.SurClaro.com.

Some users may also want to visit www.SurClaro.com and download the file nfld_mesh_fs2002.zip by Sami Mesbah. This package will dramatically improve the terrain mesh for the Island of Newfoundland. I’d highly recommend it.

Software:

GMAX…all objects
3D Studio MAX…composite textures
Airport for Windows…exclude areas
PhotoShop 6.01…textures (processing of digital photos)
