INTRODUCTION

Welcome, and thanks for downloading my panel.

This is version 2 of my Bristol B312 Britannia panel.
I have included some great gauges by Dai Griffiths which include
fully operational Start, Fuel Pump, and Ignition gauges.

******************************************************************************

DETAILS

I would like to thank all the other gauge programmers and repainters
listed at the top of this file; they are really doing the FS community a
service by providing these great gauges. Please honor the legal
restrictions at the bottom of this file. I would also like to thank Alex Bashkatov and
Phoenix Software (http://www.pss-ltd.com) for his Gauge Extract program (used to package
the gauges). Finally, I would like to thank Microsoft for the wonderful
FS98 plane/panel system, and their support of third-party add-on
developers - great job!

Thanks to Michel Polski for his PANMAKE V.2.5.3 (Shareware), an excelent program to easily
make panels for FS98, the first 100 sesions are free, after this you have to register it.

HOW TO USE THE NEW GAUGES (Thanks to Dai Griffiths)

Read this very carefully. These gauges are designed to replace only the magnetos and engine start warning lights in the original prop starter packs. All other gauges in those packs are to be used as normal. Treat the new master switch (dfd_jetmaster.gau) as a direct replacement for dfd_tmaster.gau or dfd_rmaster.gau only; it will not replace the master combination switch (dfd_mastercombo.gau) as it does not contain any generator switching code. The separate generator switches are still required to power the ammeters and generator warning lights.

All three switches must be active to start an engine.

1. Switch power on. Without power you'll hear only the switch click.
2. Press the start switch. The start indicator light will come on and the engine will spool up. If you choose to abort the start then hit the start switch again and the starter will disengage.
3. Press the fuelpump switch; you should hear the pumps activate.
4. Hit ignition and the engine will light off. In the background you will hear the start disengage.
5. When the startup sequence is complete you may either leave the ignition switch in continuous ignition (ignition indicator will stay on) or turn it off. The fuel pump indicator will remain on at all times the engine is running.
6. To stop the engine, switch the fuel pumps off. If the ignition switch is still on then the ignition will also be disconnected by the interlocking between the fuel pumps and the ignition switch and both indicator lights will go out. You will also hear the engine spool down instead of coming to an abrupt halt.
7. Ensure all switches are off before attempting a restart.

Switching off the master switch on its own will remove power from the aircraft and shut the engines down but you won't get the spool down sound.

The Bonus Line:

The new master switch (dfd_jetmaster.gau) has three switching positions; off, internal (aircraft) supply and external (ground power unit) supply. Clicking on one side of the switch (e.g. external) will supply power to the panel. Clicking on the same side again will turn the master switch off. Clicking on the opposite side of the switch (e.g. internal) will move the switch directly to that position without disturbing the power connection. If switched to external supply, which would be the normal position while starting engines, then it is assumed that a GPU is attached. Should you attempt to move off without changing your power from external to internal (i.e. disconnecting the GPU), you will hit the GPU, severely damage an engine and come to an abrupt and very noisy halt....... If this happens then you need to report to maintenance and get a new aeroplane ;-)).

FILES

(step by step instructions below in INSTALLATION)

This archive consists of 3 parts: the panel files, the gauges in
gauges.zip (all in Solentpn1.zip).

Panel.zip Panel Archive Unzip into FS98\Aircraft (should end up in a panel folder)
B312.txt This file
gauges.zip Gauges archive Unzip into FS98\GAUGES folder
omisnd.zip Sounds archive Unzip into FS98\SOUNDS folder

INSTALLATION

THIS PANEL IS FOR FS98/CFS/ ONLY! IT WILL NOT WORK IN FS4, FS5, OR
FS95. YOU MUST HAVE THE FS98 CONVERTER INSTALLED TO USE THIS PANEL IN
FS98.

I like to make a separate directory in the AIRCRAFT directory for this
panel, instead of putting it into many different planes' directory. (I do
this to avoid making multiple installations of the panel for different
planes- saves disk space.)

1. Unzip the file archive B312pnl2.zip into a temporary folder with a
program that preserves long file names, like WinZip or Norton
Navigator. Only the latest version of PKUNZIP will work!! Get them
at places like www.shareware.com. Make sure to check the "Use Stored
Folders" option!!

2. Unzip the file archive gauges.zip with a program that preserves long
file names into a different temporary folder. Check the filenames -
they should be long filenames like Propliner.rpm1.gau. If so, copy
all the files within this temporary folder into your FS98 GAUGES
folder. Let them overwrite the old versions; they have all been
improved.

If you end up with a B312pnl2 folder then:

3. Move or copy the actual B312pnl2 contents into your Britannia's panel folder

If you end up with a big bunch of files but no folders, then:

3a. If you don't see filenames ending with a 3 letter extension like
xxx.gau or xxx.bmp, then in My Computer you need to go to the
View/Options/View tab and unclick the "Hide MS-DOS file
extensions..." box.
4. Create a new B312 folder within your FS98 AIRCRAFT folder
(i.e. FS98\AIRCRAFT\fsfsconv\B312).
5. Copy the files in B312pnl2.zip (as downloaded) into your
new Blenheim folder. Do not copy gauges.zip here.

FOR EACH PLANE THAT SHOULD USE THESE PANELS:

IF YOU DON'T USE JAB98: (if you do then go to step 13)

6. Each plane has a separate folder in the FS98 AIRCRAFT folder.
7. Go into the PANEL subfolder of the desired plane, and open the
PANEL.CFG file in Notepad. The file will look like:

[fltsim]
alias=FSFSConv\panel.Recip.rg.1

If it doesn't look like the above, check the folder's location.
If you are installing the B312 panel into a plane that has a
folder name of L749WAL, for example, you should be looking at:
FS98\AIRCRAFT\L749WAL\PANEL\panel.cfg. If this is correct, then
you've already installed another panel. If you want the B312
panel, keep going!

8. Change this file to look like:

[fltsim]
alias=fsfsconv\B312pnl

9. Save the file.
10. Done!

IF YOU HAVE JAB98 INSTALLED:

11. Start JAB98 and select File/Inventory from the menus (this will
add the B312 panel to the panel list).
11b. Press the Panel tab at the top of the screen.
11c. Click on the plane you want to use the B312 panel in the box
in the lower left.
11d. Click on the B312 choice in the box on the right.
11e. Click the Associate button.
11f. Done!

TROUBLESHOOTING

1. THE ENGINES WON'T START!: If you use the Start gauge to start the
the engines, you MUST follow the instructions above exactly.

2. THE PLANE THAT I HAVE ASSIGNED THIS PANEL DOES NOT SHOW UP IN
THE SELECT PLANE MENU: you have installed this panel or modified
the plane's panel.cfg file incorrectly! Go through and double check
that you have done each step correctly. This is almost always the
problem. Also see #4.

3. THE PANEL APPEARS BUT THERE ARE ALMOST NO GAUGES: did you unzip the
embedded gauges.zip file and then copy all the *.gau files into your
FS98 GAUGES folder? All of the *.gau files need to be within the
main FS98 GAUGES folder. Did you download the DC6PNLIFR3 panel and
unzip the gauges.zip file into your FS98 GAUGES folder?

The other problem might be that your unzipping program can't
handle long Win95 filenames; check your unzipped gauges and
check if they have names like Prop2ERKadf.gau (differences
in uppercase/lowercase is not important). If not, you need to
download a new unzipper. I suggest either WinZip or the
*latest* version of PKUNZIP - it must mention that it will work
with long filenames in the text file. You can get these from
places like www.jumbo.com and www.shareware.com.

4. THE RPM OF ENGINE 1 IS LOWER THAN ALL THE REST: try pressing Shift-4,
and then Shift-4 again. If this doesn't work, go to the World/Time &
Season menu, and click on the Set Actual Time button. Set the time
for 2200 (10 pm). Click OK. Now go there again and set the time
back to what you want. Engine 1 RPM should now be OK. This is an
FS98 bug.

5. THE ENTIRE PANEL APPEARS DISORTED, OR THE SUBPANELS ARE SMALL SQUARES
IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER, OR THEY ARE NOT IN THEIR PROPER LOCATIONS:
you have probably used this panel in a Flight that originally used a
different panel. Just select a plane that uses a different panel (like
the Cessna), and then select your original plane again. If you want to,
you can then resave the Flight and the panel will appear correctly after
loading that Flight.

6. If you have problems that cannot be corrected by the steps above,
feel free to email me. However, I will expect that if you have
one of the problems listed above that you will tell me that you
tried the fix and it didn't work - otherwise I will just guide you
to this section!! If you don't have any of the problems above,
make sure that you READ EACH STEP in the instructions again and
double check that it was performed correctly. I will expect you in
your email to tell me you have done this. My email address is:
