FS2002 Royal Air Force De Havilland DH-100 Vampire F Mk.3

The Vampire first flew in september 1943 from Hatfield, England, piloted by Geoffrey de Havilland Junior and using the under-powered Halford H.1 engine developed by Frank Halford. The first Vampire model, the F.1, entered service, in the Royal Air Force, in late 1945, too late to partecipate in the World War Two. The plane underwent rapid development and equipped many squadrons of many Air Forces over all the world primarly in the fighter-bomber role. In this it was highly capable, being small, agile, relatively fast and yet able to carry bombs and rockets projectiles as well as 20 mm cannons. Many Air forces of many countries were equipped with the Vampire fighter, including Canada, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, Mexico and, obviously, United Kingdom. The shape of this plane was dictated by the engine. In contrast to the twin-engined Meteor, De Havilland chose a single-engined aircraft and a twin-boom layout adopted to reduce the lenght of the jetpipe, in order to get maximum engine performance from the low-powered engines of the time. The fuselage necelle was constructed from Mosquito-style plywood sandwich with balsa wood as a stabilishing filling. The aircraft included in this package is from the 608th Squadron, RAF Thornaby Air Base, 1950-51.
