Nord Aviation 1500 'Griffon' 2, French fighter prototype, 1957

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Nord 1500 Griffon was the prototype of a ramjet-powered fighter aircraft designed and built by French state-owned aircraft manufacturer Nord Aviation (SNCAN). It was part of a series of competing programs to fill a 1953 French air force specification for a light supersonic fighter in the Mach 2 range.

The Griffon actually featured a dual turbojet-ramjet powerplant, with the turbojet enabling unassisted take-offs and the ramjet producing extra thrust at airspeeds above 1000 km/h (600 mph).

The prototype first flew on 20 September 1955 (Griffon 1) and this one, the second aircraft (Griffon 2) flew on 23 January 1957, then completed more than 200 test flights.

With Major André Turcat at the controls (the future test pilot of the Concorde), the Griffon reached a top speed of Mach 2.19 (2300 km/h) in 1958, thus proving the soundness of the basic design. However, major technical difficulties in developing an operationally reliable ramjet led to the cancellation in 1959 of the Griffon program to the benefit of Dassault Aviation's Mirage III ...

IMPORTANT :

- If you like French jet fighters of the Golden Age, please consider also my SNCASO Trident package (use version 3), my Leduc 022, my Mirage G8 (use version 4) and my SNCASE Baroudeur (use version 3), all of them available on simviation.com.

INSTALLATION:

IMPORTANT : If you had installed my former Griffon package and/or the update, (from files "Griffon.zip" and Griffon_smallfix.zip"), the best thing to do is to remove them before installing this new one, as the old content is fully included in the new package, and even with improvements.

Then :

Just unzip the file "Griffon_VC", your will obtain 3 folders :

One folder named "Gauges" : just copy and paste all its content (8 files) in the main "gauges" folder of your FS, = "Flight Simulator 9 / Gauges" for FS2004 or "Microsoft Flight Simulator X / Gauges" for FSX. Normally, you should already have some of these gauges. So, if asked to overwrite, please answer "no".

One folder named "Effects" : just copy and paste all its content (5 files) in the main "effects" folder of your FS2004 ("Flight Simulator 9 / effects") or FSX ("Microsoft Flight Simulator X / effects"). Normally, you should already have some of these gauges. So, if asked to overwrite, please answer "no".

One folder named "Griffon2" : just copy this folder as it is, with all its content in the "aircraft" directory of your FS2004 (= "Flight Simulator 9 / aircraft") or in the "airplanes" directory of your FSX (= "Microsoft Flight Simulator X / SimObjects / airplanes").

Launch FS2004 or FSX. In the aircraft list, look for the manufacturer "Nord" and select the "Griffon 2".

That's all !

Take-off, and enjoy !

IMPORTANT : ANIMATIONS:

- All the moving parts (control surfaces, gears, spoilers, canopy ...) work with the usual keys.

- IMPORTANT : Regarding the canopy, the exit key will open the canopy when the aircraft is on the ground but the same key will activate the ejection of the canopy when the aircraft is in flight.

- The dragchute (parachute) will open if your spoilers are deployed ("/" key) AND only if the aircraft is on the ground (deploying your spoilers when flying will obviously NOT deploy the dragchute !).

- The ladder for the pilot works with the canopy key, but will only appear if the plane is on the ground (normal, you are not supposed to use a ladder during the flight !).

- You can fire or stop the flame of the ramjet engine by using the key attributed to beacon lights (usually the "o" key). The other lights (nav, cockpit, landing) work with the usual keys "L", "alt + L", "ctrl +L" ...).

As the plane uses reflexive textures, do no forget to check that you have activated the "reflects" box in the menu "parameters / display / aircraft" !!!

************************************* IMPORTANT ***************************************************

If the color of the aircraft is not stable under daylight, just unselect the option "shadows of the aircraft" (the 2dn line), in the menu Options / Parameters / Display or Graphics / Aircraft.

CREDITS:

Thanks to Jens Winkler, for the pilot and the seat that I have taken in the freeware DO335 delivered with the FSDS2 package.

Thanks to the Alpha Simulation team (Chris Lampard, Michael Davies, Phil Perrott and Udo Entenmann), as I used one of their "old" productions, now freeware, (a Mirage III B), as a starting point for my flight model.

For the panel, I have mainly used stock gauges. For the other ones, I am sorry but I dont know the name of the authors. Just let me know and I shall be happy to add them to the credits.
