Converting the Shez’s FS2004 La Guardia Airport (KLGA) to FSX

The Shez’s (Shehryar Ansari) scenery for New York’s La Guardia Airport (KLGA) was one of my favourite sceneries in FS2004, and I have always enjoyed flying between there and Boston along Long Island, or to Toronto. This scenery won the FlightSim’s Developer’s Award for December 2003.

Imagine my disappointment when this scenery would not work properly in FSX – most of the buildings reproduced okay but the ground polygons were all messed up.

For my own use, I have had a try at modifying KLGA to make it work in FSX, quite a lot of work to do this, using trial and error to determine which field and other scenery files to remove (in fact none had to be removed other than an AFCAD file if you are using one), and converting an AFCAD file to FSX using ADE, a very intuitive program from “Scruffy Duck”.

Without going round the scenery inch by inch, most of the buildings seem to transfer without trouble. I have had to adjust some of the aprons as well as many of the taxiways to get them to lie within the taxiway signs in the default FSX. Most of the buildings are there and I have not touched any of these. I cannot get rid of some “airborne” perimeter walls along the boundaries of Runway 22 where it projects out into the water. In addition I have problems of vertical walls of water around the periphery shorelines of the airport. If you are paying attention to your flying you should not notice these!

The zip file “klga_FSX”, of which this text is a part, provides the files and instructions to modify the Shez’s FS2004 scenery of La Guardia Airport (lga2004.zip and its fix lga2004fix.zip at AVSIM and FlightSim) to allow it to function in FSX. Shehryar Ansari has kindly given consent for my uploading of this patch.

To use this scenery in FSX you need to do the following two steps:

1. Remove the 2bgl files from your KLGA scenery folder, as listed in the attached text file – “remove”. I suggest you create a folder called “removals” in this scenery folder and just move the two files into there.
2. Move the three bgl files in the attached “add_to_sceneryfolder” folder, into the KLGA scenery folder.

Problems

Sorry but you are on your own with this modification. Please do not contact me for problems in FSX, this was produced for my own use and it does the job for me – however I would like to share my efforts with you and if it works, that’s just great!. Please do not seek help from the Shez for problems in FSX, this patch is not his work, and I appreciate his approval for allowing me to upload this conversion patch.

Credits

Shehryar Ansari for the original magnificent scenery
Scruffy Duck for his Airport Design Editor program.
Luis Sa for his SBuilderX program.

By the way, I have created Vancouver International Airport for FSX, including a version compatible with the payware Vancouver+ created by Jon Patch and Holger Sandmann – if you want some very dramatic flying, this payware scenery of southwest British Columbia is well worth its cost. It can be found at:

http://secure.simmarket.com/product_info.php?products_id=2476

and my freeware CYVR scenery is at AVSIM , FlightSim and various other sites.

I hope you enjoy this little importation.
