Wisley Airfield Scenery for FS2004 By Toby Vickers

Background
==========

The airfield is situated just south of the junction of the A3 and the M25 motorway in Surrey, United Kingdom. It was first used late in the war as a relief airfield for Weybridge. Vickers continued to own the airfield after the war and it became their flight test centre, being only a couple of miles from the Weybridge(Brooklands) works. New aircraft were towed down the road at night and reassembled at Wisley prior to testing. The Viking, Valiant and Scimitar were among the aircraft flown from Wisley in the 1950s.

After initial tests of the Valiant bomber, the grass runway was shown to be inadequate, the Valiant leaving deep ruts in the ground and so a hard surface runway was laid. After the Viscount, the Vanguard aircraft was deemed too large to transport by road and so from this point onwards, aircraft were flown from the short Weybridge runway to Wisley. The Vanguard, VC-10, Super VC-10 and BAC 1-11 were all tested at Wisley during the 1960s. The site was also considered for TSR.2 testing but was thought to have too short a runway. With VC10 production coming to an end and BAC 1-11 production slowing down, BAC's civil aircraft operation was looking less economic and Wisley was closed in 1973. Other factors for the decision may also be the sites location close between the major civil airports at Heathrow and Gatwick.

The buildings were demolished in the mid to late 1970s, but the concrete apron area and the runway remain to this day, as does the Ockham beacon, at the east end of the airfield. The runway is used a visual navigation aid for low flying VFR aircraft and the Ockham VOR is an important navaid for most of the traffic using London Heathrow.

This scenery
============

This scenery is intended to represent Wisley circa the late 1960s. Produced from maps, aerial photos and other photographic and anecdotal records, the layout is as accurate as I could make it. Scenery complexity must be "normal" to see all the buildings and "very dense" for the additional trees in the woods behind the airfield to be visible.

The large hangar on the west side of the apron accomodates a VC10 or Super VC10 through the main entrance. Each bay of the hangar on the east side will accommodate one Viscount, 1-11 or 1-11-500. When taxiing large aircraft (e.g. VC10, Vanguard) back to the apron from the west end of the runway, use the small taxiway to turn round and backtrack to the main exit mid way down the runway as these aircraft are too wide to taxi past the VC10 hangar. You may also notice that if using the progressive taxi feature that you are instructed to turn around at the end of runway 27 and back track - this is so AI aircraft avoid this problem.

The two sets of detuners on the north side of the airfield are for 1-11s, the single set south of the watch tower are for a VC10.

Installation
============

Either copy the scnery and texture subfolders into your add-on scenery folder or:
Copy the Wisley folder into your fs9\scenery folder - You can then use the Scenery Library to install the scenery in the "old fashioned" way!

I recommend you use the excellent Vickers VC10 and BAC 1-11 by David Maltby and the Viscount and Vanguard by Rick Piper with this scenery!
