Ohio Airports for FS 2000
by Ted Kessel and Gary Demos
3/5/01

This scenery set updates OH20v1. This scenery will not work for FS98, only FS2000.

Scenery Overview from Ted:

After the release of Flight Simulator 2000, as soon as I installed Ohio_98 for FS98 that I had co-authored with Gary Demos and Dick Graham, I discovered that although it could be displayed in FS2000, the new terrain mesh scenery played havoc with most of the runway elevations in the Ohio_98 scenery, and that the scenery would need to be redone for FS2000.

The good news is that the default scenery in FS2000 is pretty good in most places, and most of the airports I would ever want to fly to are represented. However, the default scenery lacks some of the detail I like, such as trees, more variety in textured hangars, windsocks, other aircraft, and so on.

In August, 1999 I released OH20v1, which had many of my favorite general aviation airports from Ohio_98. Since then I have added an additional 21 airports, updated a few in the previous release, and put in the scoreboard at Ohio Stadium which several people had missed from Ohio_98. This scenery still has the extra scenery around Put-In-Bay (thanks to Gary for the custom macros), and the Columbus area around The Ohio State University. Most of the default scenery has roads where they should be, or nearly so, so I generally left it alone. Occassionally I added a small town where it was missing in the default scenery, and put in some secondary roads.

The default terrain mesh looks great at I57, with the airport nestled into the hills, and
the smokestack at Meade Paper in Chillicothe right above the hills to the north.
At 6G5, there is a great view down hill from runway 09 at the houses to the south.
I had some problems at KPMH: sometimes when I went to the airport the runway was
at the incorrect elevation, and sometimes it wasn't. At KMFD the terrain mesh creates
a few gaps between the taxiways and runways, but I eventually got it to be fairly un-
obtrusive.

"Terrain mesh, high-resolution, 3rd party products" may result in some conflicts at some locations, with the terrain overlapping the scenery. I only tested this scenery and made it work with the default scenery, and it may not work at some locations when the high-resolution products are in use.

Some users of OH20V1 had some conflicts at KOSU. There is a fix for this included in this package if you get a tree line in the middle of the runway at 09R.

Here is what is in this scenery package:

Installation

Installation for FS2000:

(If you have OH20v1, delete it all and install the new stuff.)

1) You need to create some folders such as follows:

c:\adds\OH20\scenery
c:\adds\OH20\texture

In the above example c:\ is the drive where you are putting the scenery and adds is a folder for third party scenery. OH20 is the folder for this addon. I like to have all my 3rd party sceneries placed outside of the main Flight Simulator directory. This provides for a much shorter tree making edits and additions easier. I have zipped the appropriate files into appropriately named folders to help you do this.

2) Place all the bgl files in the scenery folder in your OH20\Scenery\ folder.

3) Place all the texture files in the texture folder in the OH20\Texture\ folder.

Then go to the FS2000 scenery library. Do this via World>SceneryLibrary and click on the add area button. Then find the path to the OH20 scenery folder, and highlight the folder, and give it a title something like "Ohio scenery for FS2000" in the title box. Depending on other scenery you may have, you may need to change the rank of this scenery above or below other third party scenery to get it to work right for you.

Future scenery additions?

I am not planning any future editions of Ohio scenery for FS 2000. If I left out your favorite airport, I am sorry, but I did not get to do all I wanted to, either!

Other FS 2000 scenery for Ohio by Ted:

I did not do some of the major airports in this scenery for Ohio. If you would like to add some detail to the default scenery at KDAY, KTOL and KCLE, go to http://go.compuserve.com/Gamers If you get prompted to join Gamers, go ahead. You are only joining the forum, you are not signing up for CompuServe. Once there, go to the flight simulation library and get my 0NBLGT1.ZIP file. That will give you static aircraft in a variety of liveries, other scenery detail, such as parking lots and wooded areas near airports, and Noble Air gates, for the following locations in FS2000 default scenery.

BNA - Nashville Int.
BUF - Buffalo
CLE - Cleveland Hopkins
CMH - Port Columbus International
CVG - Covington/Northern Kentucky
CYYZ - Toronto/Pearson
DAY - Dayton Int.
DSM - Des Moines
DTW - Detroit/Wayne County
IND - Indianapolis Int.
MCI - Kansas City Int.
MDW - Chicago Midway
MEM - Memphis Int.
MKE - Milwaukee General Mitchell
MSP - Minneapolis Int.
ORD - Chicago O'Hare Noble Air Hub
PIT - Pittsburgh
SDF - Louisville Standiford Field
STL - St. Louis Lambert Int.
TOL - Toledo Express

While at Gamers, feel free to check the flight simulation message boards. The technical support for flight simulation at this forum section is excellent!

If you do this, you do not need the 0NCMH and NCMH bgl files in 0NBLGT1.ZIP, as OH20V2 has scenery for KCMH. If you install the above two files, you may get some conflicts at KCMH, depending on how you have your scenery library layered.
